CDI - Test

I have an ongoing electrical problem. The stator was giving a voltage output but ohms were showing a short (red to black over 20k ohms - spec is 3k ohms) I have managed to get a reconditioned one that was surplus to another berg owner.

I fitted it and the Specs seem fine and voltage appears at the red and black however absolutely nothing out of the CDI even when the lead is held.

Before the Stator failure the headlight would dim when revved - possibly a short ?? So I have disconnected the orange wire at CDI (kill Wire) and also disconnected all looms except wires from Stator to CDI.

I have read in the forums that is unlikely that both Stator and CDI would fail at same time but I don't know how to test.

It seems to be an endless money pit and Husaberg are pretty expensive on the parts. Now I know why I bought a 2 Stroke with no battery.

What do I do next ?

Hi Aussieforce,

The oven thing didn't work then, there is no real way of testing the CDI with a test meter, do you know if the stator you have acquired was in good working order. If it was reconed in Oz there is one company that doesn't wind them to the correct spec for your year. But like you say it is very unusual for stator and CDI to fail at the same time.
The only way to comfirm if they are good or bad is to fit a known working CDI or stator, do you have any mates that can lend you one of the above.
Regarding getting nothing out of the cdi coil, unlike a points system where you get can a very small amount of HT voltage coming out, with electronic it is all or nothing.

Sparks.

RE: Re: CDI - Test

Hi Sparks,

I didn't try the oven thing as this one came up and obviously a rewound one is a better solution. I have no way of really getting a CDI to test if mine has failed. The specs on the stator are suppose to be fine but I am getting so confused :)

Re: RE: Re: CDI - Test

OK, then do you want to send both stator and coil over to me I can run them up to see where the fault lies.
If it is the CDI I have one here from Loonyberg that tested OK you could probably buy that off him if yours turns out to be faulty.

Sparks.

Thanks. I have been pulling my hair out and it seems unlikely from what you say that the CDI has also failed so I am going to speak to someone I know that does part out a few bergs. It might be just something basic that I have missed. Otherwise I will be trying to beat the xmas mail rush and send it over :) Wouldl be interested in a price of another CDI.
