ok i will be riding along in 6th doing 100 i try to cruze t 120 and it will sort of dye for half a second then go again and will keep doing it and then when you open her up i get to about 180 and its like the carby will run out of fuel if i back off and wait till the exaust starts crackling and it goes again like it was before please help oh and the bike is a 10/98 fe600 its a 99 model tho if that makes any differance

have you checked anything yet? If so, please let us know what it is.

If you've not already, I would check the float height. Too low and you'll run out of fuel on WOT.

thanks,

ok cool how do i do that im a 4th year app mechanic but i dont know much about carbys yet give an idea and i should be able to do that

thanks doug

Hi Doug,

I don't know the year of your bike, but if you check the downloads section, you'll probably find a manual for it that you can download. It should give you the stepbystep basics that you need to follow.

Anyone else here(Taf?) that can post the process, and I'll post it to the FAQ.

thanks,

If it is the PHM and it has disconnected floats (i.e. they come out with the float bowl) then:

To check it has disconnected floats, unscrew the big bolt that is on the bottom of the carb and the float bowl will come off.

Remove the carb from the bike, place it upside down on a flat table or surface and the float arms (this will be self explanatory when you take the float bowl off) should be parallel to the carb. body. If not, bend until they are.

Hope this helps,
Simon

thanks simon i will try that when i see the bike next

much appreciated

If your float height is correct, I would suggest that you are a little lean. It sounds similar to a lean bog that I have experienced on my son's bike.

i would say the opposite splat. i would say that it could be a little too rich.

either way our friend needs to put a new plug in and go for a ride as he has been. to me those aren't cruising speeds-they are flat out speeds! so i would just rub away any carbon at the exit to the exhaust, put the bike on a leaded fuel and go thrash it.

kill the engine whilst flat out but leave the throttle wide open. when you come to a stop, pull the new plug, put it in your pack and put the old one in to ride home with. look at the exit colour from the exhaust. white, milky tea, dark coffee, black?

take the new plug home and study it in your own time.

early dell orto carbs are famous for wearing out so if it is rich you may need to buy just a few cheap bits again to get you going for the carb.

keep us posted.

ok well i took the carby apart the other day cleaned it out and just bent the tabs up a bit .Problem solved they were level with the bottom of the carb where they are supposed to be i think but i bent them up a bit any way and yere it seems to be fixed more throttle response and pulls harder in the top end i dont think any thing would be worn out the bike has only done approx 3000km ...! 1500 of that at 120 kph cruizing and that speed is far from going hard it pulls to 200kph easily its just ticking over at 120 but yere any way thanks for the help guys .....!

cheers doug
