hi just thought i ask if the carb fitted on the berg((501-03)works any different to your average carb ie :i understand the basics air speed venturi ect but it seems there is a definite who-arr about touching the throttle whilst trying to start the bike,i've been told different advise first do not use throllte when starting(cold this is)but choke if req:
2nd open throttle fully and return to close a couple of times then kick it up?
I haven't tryed said second way but this is wot raises my question on how does this effect starting the bike ?

just thought id ask because u always seem to know the answer:
and I like an easy life were possible :D

I do not touch the throttle, only after it starts thumping and I want to help it run until it reaches temperature.

I do not use the choke either. Ever.

Just open the gas and pass TDC slightly and then kick it like a mule. The better the kick, the better the spark and that's how you start one of these early nineties Bergs. You do not need more mix in there, you're only going to foul it.

Only if you foul it do you have to vent out by opening it at WOT, then decomp lever pulled and 10+ kicks, to make sure the plug is dry. I always have to do that after each fall.

i dont touch the throttle at all on my berg, and it starts fine on the e-start or kick start . but i would say that having the idle set correctly is critical .

ok but as 4 choke it a little bit coler over ere & the question was does the carb work any diffrent to your standard run of the mill, ie old bikes u used to haqve a tickle valve to just get the fuel up & in when i was 14 i could start my dads norton 750 in 2 kicks , with no decompression at all , granted while learning it back kicked me clean over the full fairing but in those days that was FUN !! and a challenge to all who dared try? now i just want my bike to start first go hmmm am I i getting old and boring

The choke is simply another jet that is opened by a plunger operated by the choke knob. Open the throttle and the influx of air defeats the start circuit (and pilot circuit) signal so that the bike won't start. My bike starts without the choke if it is room temp or better but needs the choke when cold. Open the throttle and kick it with the compression release pulled in if you think it is flooded as often happens during a crash.

the carbs basic operation is the same as the carbs of old, the carb is a blender of fuel/air as we all know. but as with any design as time goes by their function is improved.-- no wot i mean gov'ner ?
