CARB VENT SYSTEM

Had a rather wet ride last weekend and my bike(04 fe450e)was filling the carb vents with water and running poorly and sometimes stalling during the deeper crossings.Anyone install one of those PC racing carb vent systems...how did it work and where did you mount the box?....thx...nsman

I had the same problem a while back myself. This summer I crossed a pretty deep creek and the bike crapped out on the other side. Thankfully, I made it all the way across!! After the crossing I thought maybe I had got a bunch of water down around the plug or something, pulled the plug cap off and put it back on and it fired right up. But, I had to cross the creek again to get back out. It did the same thing even though I went a bit slower this time. I pulled the bowl plug and drained the float bowl and there was just a couple of very tiny water droplets in there. After that no worries.

I have never used the PC system but was thinking about it when this happened. In fact I was just looking at the vent system this last weekend. Each vent has two hoses that come off of a "T" fitting and they both go down and out under the bike. So, 4 vent tubes for two vents and the overflow. That would indicate to me that only one tube is really necessary for each vent. I was thinking that if you were to just run one of each vent tubes back up under the seat and just loosely tied them off to the frame, when the other ends get blocked from water then the tubes you put up along your frame would be more than enough to vent the bowl. I'd keep them in a pretty much straigt run back down to the carb so in case you flipped over and they got gas in them all the fuel would drain back down and out the lower tubes when you stood the bike back up again.

What do you think??

That might work,I am not sure but does the fact that the engine is still running create a mild vacum in the vent lines, and hold the water there untill the engine stops. As you describe i made it through the deeper crossing(except for one time) and on the other side the engine was running poorly. As soon as I shut it off and waited a couple of seconds it started instantly off the button and worked fine.

I take the second set of vents, the ones the run up, and tie them off under the tank, slice the end at an angle and point them down. The bike is a virtual submarine.

ditto fryguy

that's what we do in europe. i would also add that only one of those five or so pipes is necassary!!!!!!! go look at them and figure how half of them can be removed, the holes blocked and then you're only taking one pipe up.

another thing we do is cut the breather off short so it's on the cases and then split the ends for about 1" up. this means eart can never clog the ends. this is for small stream work.

Awesome pics as usual kelsow!

Now where are the pics of the exact hoses we can block off; and the ones that can be routed up high? Should you decide to take on this mission, nsman wil give you a perty yellow (slightly used) backpack! :D

Hi
Two tips regarding water (we have plenty of this sweden).

1. Add a ridge of melt glue or tape in front of the air filter on the frame. Water pours on the flat frame and is sucked up by the foam and the HB doesn't like this.

2. Add carburettor spirit (K-sprit in Swedish) to the fuel, it dissolves the water so it doesn't stay as drips. Use the version for diesel engines since it contains a bigger portion of ethanol compared to tha same thing for petrol enginges, which actually contains quite a lot of water!

Here in California, we have can have up to 10% ethanol, 90% gasoline for fuel, I have often wondered how much water is already in the fuel when I purchase it!
