  I have been having problems with my 02 470 not starting that great from hot or cold and when i drop it its been a pig to start. I spoke to taffy at a local enduro and done the usual bigger battery new stator new plug adjust tappets ect
but it still dont start right. I then replaced all the jets with the stock items and the fuel switch but still not right. Last resort i purchased a brand new phm40 but could only get one with internals to suit the 501 wihich is different jets and a 40 throttle instead of a 30 does anyone foresee any problems with using these internals or should i swap over my internals?

jonboy,
I just installd a low hour carb off an 03 501 onto my 470. I made no adjustments to it at all. The bike starts MUCH better and runs well.
I can recommend checking all of your decompression mechanisms for proper lift and adjustment. Make sure the manual decompression arm returns all the way as well.
If you are still having problems you may have to inspect the valves for tuliping.

P.S. The only mods on the bike are a Big Gun exhaust can and X1 cam. You may want to service your exhaust packing as well if it has not been done.

Cheers
Ken

My 01 470 starts very easily, The drill is: cold choke on and absolutely no throttle. Once it starts to idle down (3-4 minutes) then take the choke off. When hot or after a spill no choke and again no throttle. For me never ever touching the throttle, hot or cold, seems to be the key.

Thanks guys
i will try the new carb first and if it still doesnt start well i think i shall remove the head and check for tuliping can that be done with the engine in the bike or is it easier to remove the engine? 8O

jonboy,
It is very easy to do in the bike. It should less than an hour. When you have the head out you will be able to inspect the decompression device easier as well.

jonboy

why don't you bring the bike up to soham near ely early on a saturday or a sunday and we'll run through it all and swap bits in and out if needs be.

regards

Taffy
