Carb Leak & starting problems due to flooding

Firstly, wow! excellent site and lots of info for us newbies!

I bought an '03 FE400 Last week and I have a problem which is driving me mad. Every time I try to start the bike it floods, I turn the starter and fuel gushes from a overflow on the carb.

On top of that, theres a little oil leak which is making me think my new investment was a bad one. On the plus side, the bike is in very good condition and is the newest bike I have ever owned, If anyone has encountered this problem, please put me out of my misery and tell me its all gonna be just fine if I do x, y, x!

I love this bike, and I bought it second hand from a dealers. I thought it would be a good way to get back into off road riding as Ive had a break from motocross for some years. Also, how would my FE400 perform compared to say, a 125, or 250 motocross bike? Will I get my *** kicked in the races on Saturday or does it posses hidden powers ;)

Any help or advice much appreciated, thanks boys.

Additionally, the battery goes dead after turning the bike over for less than 1 minute on a full charge, - time to replace the battery or is this normal?! And... My speedo / clock isnt showing anything, does this have a separate battery?

welcome to the site!

wher are you from?

can you please put it in your signature?

if you can check you have the old battery if you have the YTX5L and the new battery if you have the YTZ7S.

if its the atter it goes flat coz the decomp is not working. look through the doc and suss it out.

Taffy

do you have a dell orto or an upgrade to FCR?

Thanks for the fast response! Just been to the garage (gosh its cold) and from what I could see with my little maglite, the carb is a dell orto, and the battery has 'G5L-BS' on it - looks like 'powermax' but the rest I cant see to well as its in its casing.

Im from Manchester, but living in Caernarfon Wales

I went to Halfords this weekend but couldnt get a battery for a berg so I bought the KTM450 one as it seemed like a near match, if it fits (looks like it may) I may try to get it in!

Taffy, what do you mean by this?
I have the same problem, my dell orto floods and there is gas leaking from one of its breathers, and it won't start. Last time I checked the decomp was working fine though.

I cannot stop the leak, every time I open the gas valves, it starts flooding. I hit the carb in case the flloders inside were stuck, but not...

What do I do?

leaky carb, won't start.

Hi, johnpan....
If you don't have Owner's manual and Parts manual, go to www.husaberg.se then into service side bar and that should give you a list of manuals for your bike. Download and save so you will have them. I think the owner's manual has a break-down of the carb for parts.
The PHM38 on your bike is an easy carb to work on. Turn OFF the fuel petcocks, loosen the carb inlet and manifold clamps, and rotate carb slightly to make access easier. Float bowl comes off by removing big nut on bottom, just put a small cup under it to catch any fuel left in it, usually about 50-75ml max. May have to tap to get it off, carb floats will be suspended from bottom of carb, or may be in float bowl on sliders. Float "valve" is upside down- point up - and seals against the seat in bottom of carb. Easy to remove, may have to pull floats to get at it, and a #300 float valve assembly, needle and seat, is about USD $10.00.
While you are at it, disconnect fuel lines, use air hose to gently blow out the passages. Make sure your carb vent hoses aren't plugged or melted, and remove air filter element on top of frame and wipe out any and all oil that is in carb inlet boot.. If you haven't put a fresh spark-plug in the bike, ya might want to pull the old one and check it. If it is fuel OR oil wet, this will add to the hard-start problem. For more info on 'bergs, go to the side bar on this site and look at the Owners Document. There is a huge amount of info in there, courtesy of many of our members, covering all aspects of the 'bergs.

RE: leaky carb, won

i mean that if you have the latter battery and yet it still runs down very quickly = it's because the decomp is fighting the stareter and battery combination.

RE: leaky carb, won

Well Taffy, I can hear the starter motor spining, but it won't start. My decomp works fine when kicking. Must be the flywheel, yes?

johnpan

i don't follow you?

you mean that the engine turns over and turns over continually?

in that case you need the R6 starter motor!

Taffy
