Cant select Neutral on 1996 350FE

Ok I am sure this is relatively simple but I cannot select neutral when the motor is running, you might be lucky and get a false neutral when moving but other than that it just does not want to select neutral, with having to kick start it every time you want to stop for a rest is a pain in the arse!

I have replaced the Clutch/Basket/Drum/Plates which now makes the clutch work great, I have now worked out how and reinstalled the spring etc so the kick start lever does now return and I remembered to install the shim for the clutch rod (0.25mm). I have changed all the clutch&plates (it measures about 22mm which sounds about right).

I am wondering if perhaps the clutch cable is the wrong length, its on maximum adjustment at the engine case and at the lever end, one thing I did notice is the lever is none genuine but even with a genuine one I dont suppose the throw is that different, could it be possible the cable length is incorrect? or are there any known issues or parts that wear causing this problem, am I just looking in the wrong place?

Cable length is 1130mm nipple to nipple (or 44 and a half inches for the old school)
Cable sheath is 1010mm including the threaded adjuster (or nearly 40 inches)

Any thoughts and ideas welcomed

This is a normal condition, especially on the early Bergs. If you try really hard you can find nuetral while the motor is running but it does take a bit of fiddleing.

you want to make sure that you are in the 'sweet spot' for the angle the clutch arm at the motor, not the lever, is in. i think its in the docs. also if the oil is too heavy it will cause issues. but neutral is only ez to find when going from 1st to 2nd uphill when you dont want it. if you have a e-button, you can shut it off, find neutral, restart. a pain for sure but thats what i had to do on my '02 650.
cheers

I have the same problem on my 98 600s, i found rather than a first to neutral go from second give it a light tap down and it works every time. Not sure if yours will act differently or not.

Hi I just got a 350fe off a freind who has had it sat for awhile he couldn't get it started. I removed the carb and gave it a good clean. Put a new spark plug in and new ht lead. Tank of fresh fuel and she fired up. She pops and bangs and does'nt tick over. Anybody new the air and fuel screw settings. Also had the same trouble with selecting natural you just got to tap down from second really gently.

this is a 6-year-old thread? leave these old timers like Tuts in peace!

neutral: check all your steels are flat is a good start.
also, the clutch pushrod shaft has a shim on the end so check it's there.
