RE: can

try dropping to a 160MJ and putting the needle in clip 4 or 5. adjust PS to suit.

Did you loose the little washer and o-ring seal on the mixture screw?? Been there done that. Runs lean, pops and glows the headers red.

mixture screw was fully(4,5 turns) turn out and needle on clip 7, after that poping/backfiring/glowing gone.

chocking also reduced

where is the point?

idle air jet???????

Had you removed the mixture screw? If so, there is a very small washer and o-ring that can fall out. If it falls out and you dont reinstall it, you will get a lean condition like you described.
I would pull out the mixture screw and make sure the washer and o-ring seal are still there.

o-ring and washer in the place

Check your rubber intake boot for cracks and splits, they have been known to do that.

idling screw

I have the same problem. on my bike the screw needs turned out 2.25- 2.3 turns.
after riding 80 a 100 kms the screw gets off this position. What happens ? The engine gets leaner and stops in the low revs area (from idle to about 2000 rpm). When i control my idling screw it is turned 2 turns out instead of the 2.25 -2.3 turns.
The rubber ring and the little spring are still on their position.
cleaned the carb two times. No dirt in the gas tank and filter.
I have turned de screw in its good position ( 2.25 turns out) and worked well again.

Now I glued the screw with a "unlock" loctite type to see what happens in the next ride ( 30 th of december in holland.)
Rest of my carb settings are ok and checked and double checked.
Valve clearance ok, inlet rubber ok, no oil surplus from the cyl.head vent hose into the inlet of the carb.
Maybe your screw is doing the same as mine ?

RE: idling screw

one solution for wandering fuel screws is to stretch the spring a bit.
