I got this brand new shiny carb from eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... AMEWN%3AIT
Really the same exact carb as this:
http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/PHM_W19.cfm
Berger and I thought it could work on my 2001 FE501e but we're having doubts now.
It seems to be made to fit a twin Ducati 750, which has two carbs, one for the right (the PHM40ND) and one for the left (PHM40NS). D = Destra, S = Sinistra (that's right and left in Italian, for those who only eat Italian).
The jets are different, so is the needle but that can be fixed of course, except that there is one jet more than the regular Berg carb (PHM40ZS) inside of the float bowl.
There also seems to be a pumper on that carb, which could be a great advantage over the PHM40ZS. The issue here is that the extra bulky pump cover would rub against the intake air boot, making it harder to install the carb.
That's part #70 on the chart below:
http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/dellorto ... Mframe.htm
Also one part that was missing is #93 from the same chart. The adapter on the PHM40ZS does not screw on top as on the ND, it is bolted on it, making it a bit trickier to make the carb fit, and I don't know if the air boot would fit nicely without too much manipulation.
My question is this: could the pumper PHM40N (S or D) Dellorto carbs be made to work on the earlier Bergs via rejetting and fiddling with the air boot, so that 1-these bikes could use a pumper carb (without the even trickier FCR upgrade) and 2-an alternative for the harder to find ZS can be used.
In the meantime, I am going to keep this carb for a couple weeks and let you give me some advice on what I should do with it: resell it on eBay and try to break even (or even try to make a profit) or try to use it on my 2001 FE501e?
