01-02 the same. 03 parts are not interchangable with 01-02, but a complete 03 system should work on a 01-02 or complete 01-02 should work on 03. the difference from what I can tell is the connection from the mid pipe to the can (muffler).

01-02 are not the same, no. The 01 is round and longer, the 02 is shorter and oval. Talking about the can, of course. My issue is not look but rather USFS-compliance. Since the exhaust ports are the frame are the same between 01 and 03, I guess as long as you use the entire line (header, mid pipe and muffler), they should be interchangeable, as you say.
