Camshaft Question, Advice Needed.

Hi all,
I need to replace the cam on my 2004 FS650 motard as it is very pitted.
The cam that has come out of the bike is a 08 3/3205.
The engine is completely standard, and runs the full Ti Akro exhaust.
The bike is used for race/street use and I like the power delivery it makes.

My question is- what are my other other options as far as camshaft replacment/upgrades? Or would it be best to order another 08 cam?

Any advice or tips would really be appreciated, thanks in advance.

08 is the profile lable not nescesarrily the year

avoid UK regrinds we now know of at least 8 failed out of joy engineering/ taffys cams, 7 at low hours and one near 200. the problem was noted 3 years ago but they were and are to my knowledge still being sold, there are probably more than 8 that have failed but since this has all been hush hush nobody has learn't anything off each other till recently

there are some developments being made to produce the UK cams differently but AFAIK these are so far untested

the cheapest billet cam is the KTM 8/33, then the hotcams 3015 then the 610 crate engine 8/07. after that there are longer duration cams from webcams and also a custom cam from Tom miller 284 deg duration at 1mm lift but super long duration at higher lifts. he is cut7 on ktmtalk.

have attatched an update of the cam specs I have its all over the place but gives some idea. FWIW if you want more top end I'd go the 8/07, for a more tourque orientated cam than the 8/07 but with similar or more top end than the 08 try the 8/33 or the hc 3105, the bigger cams ie the 62 from webcams and the aggresive cam from tom are obviously pushing things a bit but they have worked well for the few that have used them.

the 08 is a very good cam it has very little overlap but still quite a lot of duration at high lift, it can tolerate crappy exhaust and intakes and still make a good balance of tourque to top end. my only critisism of it is the power delivery is a bit lumpy. any cam made specifically to have more top end or more tourque than the 08 will loose out at one end or the other without proper intake/exhaust tuning.

pretty sure there are some threads on the different profiles if you search "ktm cams"

Hi Bb,

If you get a longer duration cam you need higher compression IMO,
otherwise any gain in holding the valves open longer will be lost because the
dynamic the compression is lower.

Cheers spanner

FYI i have ordered a 8/33 cam (i think the first one in this forum) to try it on my SM550 ('02).

Will post results when i have it.
It is cheaper than the HC3015 and it is offcourse OEM quality ;)
