cam timing

Just double checking that I didn't mess up, here's what I did.

- fitted the balancer, made sure the dot's on the gears are in the right position

- fitted the crankshaft and the balancer shaf gear wheel as stated in the owners doc

-searched for the TDC using the dead stop method

-fitted the cam with the lobes pointing in the 11 and 1 o clock position. (checked with a ruler diagonally across the lobes and then measured with a vernier caliper, there was less than 1mm difference.)

- fitted the cam chain.

Is this the correct way of doing it, or did I miss something?

trust you fitted the clutch c/w gearwheel to lock that timing?

when you fitted the camchain and tensioned it the cam lobes should lean backwards ever-so-slightly. so they should be horizontal or leaning back slightly but not forwards.

the rest sounds good.

now turn the crank 360 exactl and the lobes will point at 5 and 7 o clock and you can fit the rocker cover.

Yes the clutch was fitted before putting the cam chain on.

Why turn the crank to be able to fit the rocker cover? This I do not understand. I turned the crank a number of times to see that there were no valves sticking open or anything else was causing problems. And then I fitted the rocker cover without problems, could be off course that I accidentaly had the cam in the right position to fit the rocker cover.

When i was tightening the rocker cover one of those small allen key bits fell into the spark plug hole, but luckily the engine was at TDC and it wasn't able to fall into the cilinder! Scared the hell out of me :D ! Now I understand to close everything up as fast as possible to prevent stuff like this happening!

to fit the rocker cover without the cam trying to open the valves as you lower the cover down! that's why you rotate the crank 360/cam 180

Ok now I get it, there was no resistance when fitting the cover, so I must've been lucky and had it in the rigth position.
