Cam timing?

Well, ive got my bike all back together, and i had it running, but it was real hard to start. I double checked the valve adjustment, it was fine. i just tried to start it and ive just got done kicking the living crap out of it, and it will try to fire a couple times but never pick up. the workshop manual wasnt too clear on how to set the cam timing. i used the dots on the crank gear and counterbalancer drive as TDC, is that right? im thinking it might be a tooth off.

well i feel like an *** It was flooded, i had it on its side (dont ask) and just got flooded. after i came here and typed that message i went back and gave it a few more kicks and she came to life! I rode it around the parking lot and it seems to run great, idles fine and revs way better than it ever did before, so i guess its not the cam timing. ive been a tooth off on a CRF before and it sure didnt run this good! it still seems a bit hard to start, but my foot hurts like hell now so i cant get a good kick on her. we will see in the morning when its cold, im calling it a night.

well, its still hard to start, but it will start and runs real good. my left foot is soooo sore right now. Im thinking i have a carb problem but im not sure. one other thing i was thinking of is the auto decompressor on the cam. when i was assembling it it seemed like it had a bit more preload than it used to. I couldnt find any other way to put it together, and it worked and all but thats what it kind of seems like, if ya kick her real fast it will start right up.

Dave, I went through this recently, the timing was a tooth off at the clutch gear, which makes it off 1/2 tooth off at the cam. that 1/2 tooth made it a bear to start, and sometimes it flat would not start. Check the link Jason provided if in doubt.

Did you have this apart that it could have gotten off a tooth?

i had the whole motor apart, down to the last nut and bolt. incidently, the reason i had the bike tipped over and flooded it out was to check the alignment of those dots. they are right on. the only way the cam could be out of time at this point is if its one tooth off on the chain. that would be an awful lot and i dont think it would run right.

dave: put a pin in the plug hole, bike in a low gear, tap rear wheel around by hand and as the bike reaches TDC have a ganders through the plastic-filled inspection hole in the right hand ignition cover.

the first mark is the ignition advance and the second is TDC. get it to TDC this way. next pull the rocker cover off and look at the cam lobes, they should be symmetrically pointing up at 11 o' clock and 1 o' clock respectively.

once you have the chain on take the engine around one rotation and the cam lobes will now both be pointing down. now put on the rockers and cover etc.

i put the camchain on in such a way that the link is on top of the cam at this point so i can work a lot easier on the engine. took 20 minutes to realise you have to drop it right off the crank gear and fiddle quite a bit. worth it though!

well, ive been messin with it a bit today and if i use the decompressor hooked to the kicker it starts right up 3 kicks when it was cold and now its 1st kick when hot, so im gonna rule out cam timing. the gas in it is like 3 weeks old and im going to put in a new spark plug, that ought to do it.

Hi Dave,
As a result of increased duration and overlap the installation of an X2 camshaft often requires one to re-tune the fuel delivery system in an effort to obtain the best overall performance. Subtle changes in the pilot circuit will have a substantial impact regarding initial starting and low speed operation. Please let me know if I may be of assistance.

Best Regards,

well, i took it out for a ride to get it broken in and it ran great! i kind of miss that midrange hit that it used to have, but it revs much easier with the new cam. Dale, I will send you an email.
