so, i took part the engine without checking for timing marks on the crank gear and the balancer shaft gear. i've tried a couple of combinations with no success. crank at TDC, balancer at BDC, cam sprocket marks horizontal. 3/4 of a rev and the piston touches the valves.

based on the bolt holes, prob a 2001-2002 (i'm guessing 2001). it wouldn't hurt to tell us.
if the piston is at tdc, and the cam lobes are up and perfectly level with the cylinder head mating surface, your crank is timed with your cam. there should not be any contact with the valves.
why did you take it apart to begin with. details, please.

shoot!!!!!! i'm sorry..... 2001 FE650. broken timing chain. replaced chain, cam sprocket, tensioner and blade.

after making sure the crank and cam are aligned as per above, rotate the balancer gear so that the keyway is straight up and install the clutch gear to hold it.
picture is from an '04, but should be the same
