Hi all
after putting the head back to gather with the Taffy spring kit ( awesome kit by the way )and then timing the cam as per the 05 manual , line up the 3 dots on the primary pinion and the idler shaft gear then making sure the dots on the cam wheel are aliened with the edge of the head cam lobs facing down towards the head ( special note in manual saying to do this ) then screwing all other parts together now she will not start it turns over fine the back fires through the carb ( nice flames ) any ideas anyone ????????

Hi Matt,

Sounds like you are out a tooth on the cam timing, when aligning the three dots be sure you have actual TDC. The three dot thing is to time your balance weight to the crank.
Remove your plug get actual TDC then recheck the dots on the cam sprocket are parallel to the head. Then check your three dots coenside to each other.

sparks.

true TDC is when the beginning of the high point on the outside of the flywheel is level with the middle of the stator cover's screw hole. i would then do it your way with the lobes down and then then i would turn the crank 360 degrees and look at the lobes to see that they are symetrical.

then a further 360 degrees and you are ready to fit the rocker cover.

Thanks guys , its a bit of a piss off as i followed the manual to the letter and rechecked it at least 5 times. still i keep you posted

RE: Re: Cam timing after fitting taffy valve spring kit

Just checked it all againe and every thing is fine . now what ??

RE: Re: Cam timing after fitting taffy valve spring kit

try not to confuse the alignment of the 3 dots with cam timing. as sparks said, it is just to align the counterbalancer with the crank and the dots lined up will not be at tdc. after making sure they are aligned, leave it and deal with cam timing as a separate issue. as long as the dots were lined up as per the doc they will stay that way while you readjust the cam at true tdc.

just whilst we're on this subject.

when the engine is locked using the notch in the crank is that at TDC?

Is that true with SEm and Kokosan stator covers?

RE: Re: RE: Re: Cam timing after fitting taffy valve spring

no. it's true of the '04s and later. the earlier engine you know about.

this time i used the old pencil down the plug hole and the flywheel trick to find TDC and then checked the cam dots and made sure the lobs are at 11 and 1 every thin checks out fine :?:

Late braking news , my berg lives . thanks guys :D
