Cam Timing 501FE?

I am replacing the camshaft in my 95 501FE and I need to know how to time the cam. I found a service manuel for a 99 and I have read some topics in this forum about later models. Do I use the same procedure?

Find TDC using a dial indicator/long thin screw driver. With the lobes facing down, line up the timing chain sprocket mounting bolts at 90 degrees (perpendicular) to the head cover mounting service.

Can someone please help me before I break it?

d vasquez (welcome and good luck at UHE!)

to find TDC you may wish to push a rod through the spark plug hole and 'lock it' by simply jarring it to one side. also put a long bolt into the top hole of the ignition cover with the cover off. i even put two nuts on the bolt, a tab of cereal box card cut to look like a teardrop (like the sillouette of this :!: ) and put on the bolt and pinched up by the two nuts.

i mark the engine stopping one way and then the other and divide the difference for TDC. use a biro to mark the flywheel.

personally, i have a proper TDC stopping tool but, a 'fat philips screwdriver' wedged in and over at an angle will suffice for a first effort.

when you place the piston at TDC you can then lay the cam in with the lobes pointing up like 'mickey mouse's ears'. they should be perfectly level with the top of the head when finished.

fit the camchain, then the tensioner and check the cam again. remember, if you had the left sidecover off and all the gears and clutch basket off etc etc you can get the timing wrong in TWO places-both the cam and the timing gears as well. oh such fun!

Taffy,

Thanks for the info. Your idea for finding TDC is great. This bike and my flippin KTM are the first vehicles I've ever worked on that don't have markings to show TDC.

Do you have a suggestions for a new camshaft. The current cam is a MSR grind (Malcom Smith Racing?). The shaft has worn out where the water pump seals sit. I have the stock cam but it's worn in the same spot. Webb sells a cam, but I think they are regrinds and I'm not sure if this repairable. Does anyone sell a new cam? I'm looking for something pretty wild.

I beg your pardon!
MSR never produced a camshaft. Said camshaft is most likely that of a Lineaweaver X2. Years ago MSR retained my services for the construction of two complete Lineaweaver / Husaberg motorcycles. I was told said motorcycles were to be exported (Portugal) to a wealthy client. Shortly thereafter my Husaberg upgrades were being duplicated and offered under the MSR banner.

I still become quite angry when I think about it!

Trust being the issue is it any wonder why I sometimes get a bit crazy?

there is nothing that can't be done with anything old. first of all a bike of your's age will be being broken everywhere and anywhere! indeed lineweaver uses old ones to keep his papers from flying out of the toilet window!

i've known folk to move the seal a little further along but i don't know the bike well enough to know. however everything is repairable.

you don't have to tune to re-new.

sorry but i'm in the UK but i'm sure one of the lads will help here!

Dale,

Do you have camshafts available? Can I get prices? Website? Catalog?

I'm truely sorry about mentioning MSR. I'm just reading what's on the tech sheet that came with the bike.

Hi dvasquez,
No apology required as it was a lesson I obviously needed to learn. I quite simply took advantage of your post to do a bit of sniveling. If anything it is I whom owes you an apology. :D

In any event, I likely can have your camshaft repaired and ground with a proper profile. Cost is between 300.00 - 350.00 depending upon the current volume of existing cores.

Visit my UHE supplied Gallery as pictures of said camshaft are available for your viewing: http://www.husaberg.org/modules.php?set ... _album.php

Happy you are here and once again welcome aboard.
Sincerely,
Dale
