Cam lobe rub

My bike began making a tapping sound and then died this weekend. After getting it home and removing the cam cover, I found a broken valve spring. (see attached). But what concerns me is that there is also some rubbing of the cam lobe on a bolt post that holds the cover. Hopefully you can see it in the picture. My questions are - Has anyone seen this? and what's the best way to fix it? I could file the post, but it appears the cam can move back and forth, which itself may be the problem.

Thanks in advance,

i would try and find a shim that sits next to the bearing. it needs to be a narrow shim when looking at it from the side so that it doesn't interfere with the oil splash to the bearing. you only need it to move a little bit.

Hey Dalton

What condition are your cam bearings in maybe the bearing on the sprocket side is starting to fail and the tension from the timing chain is pulling the cam down on an angle causing the lobe to strike against the post. Just a thought.

just popping a head gasket on a friends 04 berg and it shows the same signs of rubbing from the cam ,the only way i see it touching is ifyour bearings were comptely fecked or the round end plug is put in the wrong way allowing the cam to move ?

Wow, it looks to me as if even the cam bearing is opposite the sprocket is moved inward nearly an eighth of an inch. Could it be that you installed a camshaft sprocket backwards or something? The offset of the sprocket is the only thing that I can think of that would pull that thing over like that.
