well like the owners doc says not if but when. lost one of the cam follower bearings on my 02 fe 400. it took one of the adjusting screws with it and also made a crack in the cam cover. the adjusting screw was laying in the head, but the bearing is gone into the engine. a couple of questions:
1. how do i make sure the engine is clean of all the bearing debri?
2. is there an upgraded bearing, the doc shows 6204 rs, thats a $3 skateboard bearing, is that right?
3. the doc mentions that the cam is at fault. would this be a good time to upgrade. is it neccesary? lx2? where would i find one and what do they cost.
4. could i weld up the cam cover instead of replacing it?
5. the rocker assy. seem ok. can i reuse them?
thanks in advance for everyones help. this site makes life with the berg musch easier, especially when the closest dealer is 450 miles away (fortunately its BOSS).

I KNOW THIS SOUNDS LIKE SLAGGING BUT BLOODY HELL MATE!!!! HOW DID YOU GET TO THAT POINT!!!!!! I THINK THAT IF THE FOLLOWER BEARING WENT SOUTH THEN YOU WILL BE LEFT WITH THE PIN THROUGH THE ROCKER AND THE OUTER RACE/WHEEL. THE CAM WILL BE SCORED FROM THE SKIDDING.

THIS DOESN'T EXPLAIN THE ADJUSTER SCREW. WOULD LIKE MORE PHOTOS. GOOD CHANCE THAT YOU HAVE DAMAGED THE TIP OF THE VALVE AND TO GET IT OUT WILL HAVE TO FILE ROUGHLY THE EDGE OF THE TIP OF THE STEM. INLET OR EXHAUST? SO VALVE AS WELL.

1. how do i make sure the engine is clean of all the bearing debri? ABSOLUTELY NO WAY. REBUILD. THERE IS A GAP AT THE BACK OF THE cc GUIDE AND THEY SIT THERE. THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE GUIDE OUT IS TO HAVE NOTHING IN THE LEFT COVER AT ALL - IT'S THE LAST ITEM OUT BAR THE GEARSHIFT MECHANISM...

2. is there an upgraded bearing, the doc shows 6204 rs, thats a $3 skateboard bearing, is that right? THIS IS THE BEARING ON THE END OF THE CAM. IT'S NOT THE FOLLOWER BEARING SO WHICH HAS GONE? IT'S ACTUALLY A 6204/C3 2RS WHICH YOU REMOVE ONE OF THE RUBBER SEALS FROM OR BOTH OR NONE DEPENDING ON YOUR PREFERENCE. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM MY FREIND. THE BIKE NEEDED A REBUILD.
3. the doc mentions that the cam is at fault. would this be a good time to upgrade. is it neccesary? lx2? where would i find one and what do they cost. IF IT'S THE FOLLOWERS YOU ARE ON ABOUT WHICH I NOW DON'T THINK YOU ARE THEN YES IT'S THE CAM THAT STARTED IT BUT IF IT'S THE BEARINGS THAT HOLD THE CAM THEN NO IT ISN'T. IF THE CAM IS SCORED THEN DEFO NEW lx2. THEY COME FROM LINEAWEAVERS AS THE DOC SAYS. YOU FIND OUT THE COST.
4. could i weld up the cam cover instead of replacing it? PHOTO BUT POSSIBLY YES
5. the rocker assy. seem ok. can i reuse them? SO YOU ARE ON ABOUT THE CAM BEARINGS FAILING? YES YOU CAN BUT ONE HAS LOST THE ADJUSTER AND NEEDS CHECKING, YOU'LL NEED NEW SHAFTS. DEFO THE cfb'S AND A CAMCHAIN AND THE UPGRADED TENSIONER AND THE UPGRADED DECOMP.

YOU WILL ALSO HAVE TULIPED INLET VALVES WHICH YOU MUST REPLACE IF THEY CAN'T BE CLEANED UP. ALL SEATS SHOULD BE KISSED. IF YOU REALLY WENT TO TOWN YOU WOULD GO TO DUAL VALVE SPRINGS. WHILE THE ENGINE IS DOWN YOU MUST REPLACE THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT INNER AND OUTER BEARINGS. UNFORTUNATELY THAT ONLY LEAVES THE PISTON AND RINGS WHICH WILL BOTH BE KNACKERED BY NOW, THEN ALSO THE MAINS AND A ROD KIT. ROD KIT WILL BE ABOUT $200-$300 IN THE USA. I'M NOT FROM THE USA I DON'T HAVE PRICES. SEND THE ENGINE TO THE BOSS AND START SAVING OR CROSS THE BORDER TO A CRAZY CANUCK.

RE: Re: cam follower bearing help

thanks taffy. ill post pictures tommorow. it was the cam follower bearing that failed. the cam bearings look good. i will inspect closer when i take pictures tommorow but the tips of the valves looked ok too. the bike kept running until i turned it off, but would only run at idle.

cam is obviously toast, as well as one rocker assy., the broken bearing must have got between the rocker and the rocker cover because the cover is broken directly above the bearing that is still intact. complete rebuild in order? i was hoping to sell the bike after this season and go to an 07 or 08. might have to hang on to the 02 for one more season.
