Has anyone found an alternative to the $100 motion pro tool?

Am I missing something, can the cam be removed without breaking the chain?

Hi Dust_Buster,

If you're only looking to remove the camshaft, yes it can be removed without breaking the chain.

Here's how to do it:

Put the engine at tdc on the compression stroke and then remove the rocker cover.

Once removed, turn the engine round until the cam lobes are pointing upwards and the "second" camshaft nut is accessible. Undo this nut and remove it. Now turn the engine round again to tdc on the compresion stroke, back to where the cam lobes are pointing downwards. Now you can remove the next nut holding the camshaft and gear in place.

Next part is to remove the camshaft bearing, sometimes just a tap is required, sometimes more force is necessary. First, make sure you remove the camchain tensioner!, then slip the bearing off the camshaft.

Now remove the decompression bobweight - you may need to just turn the engine backwards slight to get hold of it. pull it out while also pulling the spring off it and it should come out quite easily.

The next step is to just tap the gear off the camshaft and lift out the cam towards the right hand side of the bike.

It sounds more involved than it really is - takes about 15-20 minutes.

Cheers,
Simon

Thanks for the info!

My plan was to remove the head as well, does this proceedure still apply?

I've got a slight oil leak at the front of the engine right by the galley where the cam chain lives. It is hard to tell exactly where it is coming from since it just leaves a film of oil after a days ride, at first I wanted to blame the rocker box, but after removing it, I don't think that was the problem. I suspect the head gasket is leaking.

Unfortunately if you're going to remove the head you will have to break the chain. If necessary, the chain can be broken by using an angle grinder to carefully grind the top off the rivets on one link and then a split link used to re-assemble.

however, from your description, I suspect it is nothing more than the silicon requiring replacement on the rocker cover - this is by far the most common cause of leaks where you suggest. Try re-sealing the rocker box with new silicin first.

In addition, sometimes people don't replace the valves inspection cover gaskets often enough and these cause a leak too.
