I have a fe 550e -04 which i have replaced cam chain on and when i checked the tensioner position after 2 hours of usage i found out that i only have one mm left on the tensioner.
I have checked the the timing chain tensioner (plastic and found only little wear and i checked timing chain tensioner and couldnt find any wear. do anyone have suggestions what it could be.

I heard of a new longer tensioner (the metal part with the spring) for newer models, does anyone know?

Hi Denke

I had the oppersite problem when I did mine the first chain was as tight as hell (Regina) so I ordered a DID fit perfect.
If you have no wear on the tentioner it must be in the chain what make of chain have you used. Should have 66 links.

Sparks.

RE: Re: cam chain tensioner

i ordered a 66 link original chain from husaberg part number 800.36.013.000

RE: Re: cam chain tensioner

Sparks what's wrong with the Regina being tight? It will loosen rapidly anyway. My former chain was a Regina as well and it was too loose after quite a few hours of use.

denke

make sure you get the DID chain and not the jws chain .

mr le frog sir

if the chain is too tight it causes rapid wear at the pins of the chain , thats why is gets loose real quick . you don't want that sort of load on the top end , i mean , imagine if it snapped and destroyed all your the effort you put in working in a tin shed in the arizona desert at 120 + temp .

Well it was not super mighty tight. The original chain was a Regina as well and yes it did end up destroying my top end by way of a lock nut it sent through at what I guess was a pretty high velocity (as if coming out of a shotgun).

How many recorded instances of broken Reginas have we heard of?

dale has a photo of a snapped regina chain , but the brand of chain makes no difference if it is too tight . it could still break .

Hi LeFrog,

There's tight and there's tight, the Regina chain I first put on was tight even before I put the adjuster in and even with the adjuster backed right off all the way it still added more tension when fitted, I've been rebuilding engines for many years and something told me straight away that it weren't right.
As most people know in 2004 they went to DID cam chain also I am wondering now whether they changed the tooth pitching slightly to suit the DID but doesn't suit the Regina.
Once the DID chain was fitted there was just the right amount of slackness before fitting the tensioner.
Has anyone fitted a DID to a pre 04 model?.

Well after riding the bike a few times around my backyard (don't worry I got a big backyard) and the dirt road by me, time for me to open the top and check on all of that and make sure it is in good working order before I hit the trail.

Hmm something is telling me my valve adjustment had gone wrong since the rebuild, as the bike now starts but dies after a minute and bogs, pops and dies if I ride it, unless I have the idle way high.

Yes, I removed the carb and cleaned it reaaallly good. Also brand new gas in there.

hey denke ,i had the same problem with mine.i put a new cam chain in it thinking it would fix it,but no.
well i thought the alloy cam wheel must be a bit worn,so i replaced it with the hardened steel one,but no again.
replaced the old white style guide( on the tensioner side) with the newer longer black one, bringing adjustment back slightly.
i rang up the previous owner thinking he must have either shaved the head or taken a skim off the deck....but no!
there is no more it could be,either the deck height is wrong from factory,or the cam bearing boss height is wrong from factory.doesn't have to be wrong by much to lose adjustment.
quick fix .. heat the black guide up and put more bow in it (like in my gallery).
while i had mine apart just recently ,i thought i would do the job properly by getting the cam boss built up,then i ground it down bit by bit until it brought the adjustment right the way back.of course then the rocker cover won't bolt down flush because the bearing is sitting higher.a skim will have to be taken out of the rocker cover where the top half of
the cam bearing sits.works good if you trust yourself to do it.
told ya froggy that its a laboratory experiment!!
ya gotta love/hate these bergs ..don't ya...
..weed..

i can't explain yours popup but the 550 has different cases and unless they were machined perfectly to remove a complete link i would think that all three engines have different camchain tensioning.

the three crankcase heights are:
450
550
and 650.

Taffy

replaced a primary drive chain in my triumph years back, and it was a lot tighter that i thought it ought to be. the tensioner was backed all the way out. ran it for about 5000 miles. never did loosen up. but never lost a clutch bearing either. has to be something in the tolerances that the chain builders use.. or don't use.
