Cam chain tensioner install...

Hey all. I just finished up a valve adjustment, my first one on my new FE570. It went according to all the tutorials and the book and was pretty simple. The only thing I'm worried about is I haven't seen any specific info on installing the cam chain tensioner and I don't want to mess that up. In the manual it says to compress it to get rid of the accumulated oil and then lock it compressed with about 3 mm sticking out. Install in that state and then push on the installed tensioner through the top nut. I did all that but I didn't feel anything change when I pushed on the tensioner through the top nut. Should I have felt it release or push down or anything at all? I'm afraid it'll remain compressed and not being doing it's job in there. Or does the oil just get in there and unlock it and create the tension it needs? (I know I should replace it with an aftermarket one. That's on the list.)
Thanks!

Normally it makes a noise when it is unlocked and you can feel it

dismount it again and you can see if it was unlocked or not

if it was unlocked, redone as you did

the simplest when you make the adjustment (with the valve cover removed), it is to unlock the tensioner by compressing the chain guide,
it's impossible not to feel that it's unlocking, and visually you can see if it's unlocked or not

Much appreciated! I didn't get this info till after I was done unfortunately. New to forum stuff. Wish I got notifications to tell me I had replies. I just posted another question in an update post elsewhere, but yes, I realized too late that if I had just had the valve cover open I could verify the tensioner had released and the chain was under tension. I finally did verify that way but only after slightly unscrewing the tensioner to feel if it had pressure on it and then screwing it back in after feeling that it definitely did. I hope that process of screwing it out and then back in didn't mess up the tension.
Maybe I should redo it, but since it's hydraulic and I had pushed all the oil out of it, the actual tension it should be at wouldn't be established until the bike was started so I'm hoping I'm ok.
