Cam chain connector

The current engine repair manual shows a cam chain with the sideplate retained by two little clips. It does mention that there are two types, so the other one must be a typical U shaped clip.
I suspect that the repair manual picture is a carryover from earlier years. The engine parts manual lists a DID cam chain and shows a rivet style connecting link. For the 07 550 I expect to buy the chain riveting tool. Before I order it, is there a clip retained link available for the DID chain that can be used in place of the riveted style?

Hi Neil,

Regarding the link I wouldn't trust the clip type, rivet link every time, and I wouldn't go to the expense of a riveting tool. The ends of the rivet link are very soft. What you need is a heavy billet of steel that a friend could hold against the chain plate on the cam side and with a small steel punch and hammer you only have to tap gently and the rivet end will peen over very easily. Because of the heavy piece of steel the rivet link takes all the loading this is how I've always done mine.

Regards

Sparks.

Thanks, I will use the same method.

RE: Re: Cam chain connector

Just to add some balance to the issue: I have been using those small clips for some years now, without any problems at all. I split the motor at least every 5 hours, so riveting the chain was too much work.

camchain.

Hallo
I agree with Dr C, we have used the clip model for years, we have 2 diffrent models, one with 2small clips on each pin or one big.
We have also used a rivet type, and re-used it several times, we open the 670cc engine very often.
We use the riveting tool that is in the part manual, works fine.

Thomas
