Cam chain adjustment

Can anyone give me a description of how to adjust the cam chain tensioner. I have 150 hours on my 400 and i've never done it before. I read up in the doc and found all i need except the procedure for adjustment.

I can see that its a ratchet plunger and I guess it's under spring pressure. Is it self adjusting?

I was reading Frogs post about the chain slipper and I guess mine is getting worn out. With 150 hours on the clock should I strip and rebuild the top end soon?

Any comments appreciated.

The cam chain tensioner adjusts automatically, as it is equipped with a spring.

Hey Kzoo. Can I pick your brain about the FCR on a 400? I got a 39 waiting to go on and I'd like a recomendation for jetting to get me started. It's a MK 1 and was fitted on a breg I believe.

Lounge?

I would start with Taffy's suggestions if the DOC -
Carburation

I'm running the DMS needle in my MK1 for the FE. My FE is running a 38 PJ instead of the 35 PJ; I would also recommend the PAJ screw.

Cam chain tensioner

Can anyone shed some light on a "manual cam chain tensioner" to replace the auto system on my 03 650. Has anyone done this?

I haven't encountered a readymade one for the pre-'08 bikes. (They may exist! I don't know!) They exist as aftermarket parts for the 70-degree bikes on.

They're really very simple. My manual one I got for the DRZ: A block you screw to the motor. Threaded rod. Rounded knob on the end that presses against the tensioner blade. Locking nut system and oring.

DRZ folks have converted their automatic tensioners to manual. Some info on Thumpertalk: DIY Manual Cam Chain Tensioner (it's easy). - DR-Z 400 - ThumperTalk

What are you seeking to do? Is the automatic one giving you problems? What type is the tensioner in these motors? Spring and ratchet?

The reason I changed the DRZ one is that it's supposed to stretch the cam chain too much and cause premature wear. I also trust the MCCT one better so I swapped.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was looking at the pros &cons between auto and manual adjusting. Auto leaves you with a possibility of something going wrong as where the manual gives you piece of mind. Looking at the pre 05 models they are more prone to parts failures so I was looking at trying the process of all eliminating.
