Buying a 02 Fe501 versus newer 450

Hallo. I'm thinking to start riding enduro and are looking for a bike, and find a very nice very low hour 02 fe501 bike, look like new and its true.Read 15-20 hour. never worked on since new. I have looked so far after a 450 04 and newer before but now when i found this bike i got very interesting in it.
Now to the dilemma, I have not worked much with older bike than 04. and the 02 can have they issues I've reed. and some things may need to change to make reliable. What mod of what i listed you think its needed to make a man sleep better. or if you have some more to add to the list.

1 -maybe singlerow CB Probably need to change? problem with the old geardrive to cb?
2-camchaft shift to 08cam?
3-camgear and decompweight?
4-kickshaft to newer model?
5-startermotor and battery.
6-new type of rollermainbearing.

Then the chassi and suspension I think is little better on a 04-05? but then again I'm a novis in enduro and haven't think to start racing, just with my friends.

can a single row cb just explode in low engine hour? or whats a safe time on these?
Probobly can run the bike this seson then do a check over in the winter or?

I have a new fcr41 in my garage to shift to. so the stock carb goes.

Best regards Patrik

patrik?

been selling 650 engines lately?

ok, there are no reliability issues with the '02 501 mechanically.

1) it has the dual bearing and later gear teeth

2) 08 cam only while DVSK otherwise half a job.

3) it has steel cam sprocket but you'll have to machine the shoulder for the decomp

4) no need if you cure the other problems

5) yes go to beefy and good battery with the keihin, with the decomp, DVSK and '08' cam.

6) no need at all

your only real issues are the nasty cam and springs, the weak starter and general starting issues. get them sorted and the valves, follower bearings, camchain etc etc will cope.

the suspension is ancient now..... i would seriously consider a set of closed cartridge forks front and lots of money having a revalve on the rear.

Sorry Taffy but you are incorrect on numbers 1 and 3.

The 02 501 came with a single row CB bearing and an aluminum cam sprocket. Those two items were replaced on my 02 501 as part of a factory program here in the states. Not sure about the rest of the world. BOSS informed me of the program and did the replacement work on my bike. I don't recall, but it's possible an upgrade was also done on the rocker rollers or just the follower bearings.

i've checked and we're both right! both types of sprocket and both types of balancer were fitted in the same year. they just picked on the yanks which i thought was very unfair.

thanks for the input. But i change my mind when i found a really nice Fe450 08 to a bargain price i couldn't resist. 30hour, alu-fueltank, full acra, reclusecluch, mousse, rental twinwall, highseat, new fork and damper, plus all oem parts and more. :D

Hey Patrik,
That's excellent news that you found such an awesome bike! You'll be so much happier that you found a newer model than the 02' you were looking at. Post some pictures and ride report when you get a chance.

Congratulations!
