I`am trying to get a idea on where to look on solving a problem.I run a 55w halogen light on my berg but lately the thing shoots them as fast as I put them in.What would cause that?Bad ground, switch or what?I have both lighting coils hooked up.I don`t think that would make a difference. Thanks for any ideas.

Bill, not absolutely sure about your bike but the later models use an AC regulator to limit the voltage to the headlight.

If you can, check the voltage at the headlight while giving the bike a bit of a rev. If it goes above 14V AC, your regulator is faulty.

Not sure about connecting both of the stator outputs together. If they are in phase it would be OK but if there is a phase difference it may not be good. Brad has rewound them, he should know.

Thanks I`ll check into it.Right now I have taken the light off but the wires are still in place so I can check it when I get a chance.I had everything off when I got my starting straightened out{knock on wood}just didn`t think of that until to late.Thanks.

I`am certain that the regulator went bad.Until I get another one I just went a head and removed the light, wires and all since I have no real need for lights right now. This gave me a chance to hide and prep the wiring and waterproof everything. Thanks and take care.

Sounds similar to a problem I had except when the regulator died the battery exploded!

If the regulator is working properly then using both stator windings connected together would not be a problem. However, if the lights work OK on one winding only then I'd use that as it makes life easier on the stator & regulator and wastes a tiny bit less engine power.

Download the "98 FEE Charging System schematic and breakdown" from the Downloads / Parts Manuals & have a read. It contains a bit about a possible fix for the regulator you have may save a few dollars. If you know any 'lectronics nerds it also has lots of crap about the regulator circuit & operation that may be of use, as they will definitely be able to fix it.

I modified the charging system on mine but that is probably not necessary if you were happy with it before it started blowing bulbs.

Thanks Brad. The regulator was grounded with the blue wire mounted to the bolt that passes through to ground. The ground connection{the many male connectors, shaped sort a like a crown}I had mounted to the same bolt.I don`to know if this had anything to do with it.Everything seemed tight but with so many things coming together at one point I might have over looked something. When ever I decide to hook the lights back up I will try one yellow instead of both.Is there any way to check the regulator with a multimeter? Thanks and take care.

Easiest check is as Twistie said - hook a voltmeter across it with the engine running and lights on.
