Broken valve spring

Last weekend my Husa died on me, and after opening it i found out there was a valve spring broken. Now i'm not that technical, but it seems to be quit a job to replace it, as i need to take the camchain off and on again. From what i read on this forum, there are a lot of other things i need to look out for. But putting back the camchain the wright way worries me the most.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how i could best do this job, and should i change some other stuff while i'm busy with it? It is a FE550 2004 with no known dealer history.

RE: Re: Broken valve spring

i changed my two exhaust springs last weekend because of one broken one but i put in a standard valvespring where do you get those double springs does it fit from a ktm or what...?

RE: Re: Broken valve spring

Personally I would take the head off to check for any more damage like a bent valve etc.
A bike of that vintage is prolly due for some new valves depending on the use.
If you only wanna do the top end then you can do it all in the frame.
The cam chain is easy. Break it with a chain breaker or as I do with an angle grinder - if using the grinder keep the crap out of the bottom.
Don't drop the ends when split, tie em up with some wire or something . You can buy joining links but you may also want to replace the chain if its got some wear. Use the old chain to pull the new 1 thru. Re-joining needs a lump of metal, a hammer and a friend.
Lining it all up on re-assembly is explained in the doc but if you don't understand just ask here and someone will help.

RE: Re: Broken valve spring

I'll replace all valves and springs just to be sure. Got the parts yesterday and they're all KTM parts, they also sent me the dual spring which looks more reliable than the old one. Still have to get the cylinderhead off, so hope there isn't much more damage below there as the piston seems rather expensive. Waiting for some tools to do the job.

RE: Re: Broken valve spring

Got the bike repaired now, and with the new valves and dual valve springs it now runs a lot better. Although i had my doubts that i would be able to get it to run again after i got it apart, as i've never done this before, it did thanks to the info on this site. Learned a lot in the proces, and next time i won't ignore the signals the bike gave me. Banging exhaust after you loosen the gas, sudden oil consumption and less compression should have made me aware of the problem before the parts finaly broke.

Anyway, thanks all of you for the valueble input.

i suggest a small donation to the maintenance of the site , i mean the info available saves you $$$
