Broken timing chain, why ???

I got a new 03 FE400E in Jan 05. I have approx 1100 miles and approx 70 hrs. Oil was changed every 2-3 rides . Valves adjusted and on top of the maintenance. In a race 2/11 and motor seized. Drained oil 2/13 and found chunks and even a little washer. Pulled side cover and found a broken timing chain. Why?

My guess is that something came loose from the valve train, maybe a valve adjuster nut?, jammed between the cam gear and the chain, and caused the chain to break. The fact that you found meatal debris would back this up.

Pull the rocker cover and you will have your answer.

For a stint Husaberg used an inferior chain in the post 2000 engines.

It was common to replace said chain with that of a cut piece from earlier years. Then the earlier model chain was replaced with that of the inferior product.

I sourced solid roller / solid pin chain to address the issue. Newer engines are now equipped with a quality OEM chain.

Hope this helps.

i'm with johnF3. it happened to me too! i had a tappet nut come loose and it jumped into the camchain. i had the earlier and beefier chain in that dale mentions and so i ripped out the top of the tappet box and the chain never broke!

look for a tappet locknut somewhere and when you're done-don't feel bad

Interesting stuff about the quality issue. What chain does my FS650E have? It's a 2004 model and when do I need to replace it?

On an 03, the little washer you found could be a sign of the decompressor stop bolt/washers and nut comming undone . The nut or bolt gets jammed in the chain and chain wheel, breaking the chain.

Here is a copy of page 28 the 03 parts manual showing the parts (part item numbers 4, 6, and 20).

Good luck,

Joe
