I seen black soot from the edge of the cap on some of my friends bikes. It seems it's a bit too much restriction in the oem on higher revs.
If you want to keep cost down and you don't mind having a little shorter silencer you might be able to trim it back a 1/2" or so. It may take some internal trimming also but it might get you by till you decide what you want to do long term. Since it is ripping it's self apart it sure wouldn't hurt to take it apart and have a look. Just a thought.
