Broken kickstart

I just broke the kickstart on my '03 fe400 and I've been advised that the item fitted '05 and later is a better replacement.

Any views on this?

You're going to find these threads to be of interest:

thread 1
thread 2 (link goes to page 2, where the good stuff is)
thread 3 (content mostly just tells you why the later part is stronger)

thanks,

I fitted the updated kickstart shaft to my '03 FE400 no with no problems. The original had bent and was probably on it's way to snapping off.

The Kickstart and the kickstart shaft are two different parts. The part # for the new kickstart is the 06 and newer part and supersedes all the 01 to 05 parts.
The kickstart shaft is the part that fits in the case and is the part the kickstarter bolts to.It was updated in 04 as the thread says

Thanks Guys.

On reflection I feel I should mention that it is the lever rather than the shaft that I broke.

So now I'm wondering if there is a later lever that is a better replacement for the stock '03 item?

I'm also wondering how long before i will be replacing the shaft too !!

On the shaft, it seems clear that the later item addresses the issue of strength & shaft breakage by different machining of the shaft. Are there any other benefits (function?) of the later shaft? I feel that the swing of the stock item is short.

On the lever, mine broke the aluminum where the socket goes over the stubby steel shaft that the lever turns on (damn it's hard to describe this stuff clearly; wish I hadn't thrown it away in a petulant frezy, I'd post a pic).

So should I be looking for a different lever? IF so what are the advantages?

Should I consider a different shaft? If so what are the advantages?

Thanks

The new update 06 k/s lever is good.Be sure to use the correct bolt and washer to keep it properly held on the splines. The original 400 k/s shaft has proven to be fine, dont replace it until it is broke.

Thanks for the tip. I guess the new kicker will fit the original splines? Whats better about the 06 kicker?
