All,
Just thought I'd write a quick blurb about my recent switch from pirrellis to Bridgestone tires.
I had called up Fritz one day to ask what he thought about a good off road tire, as the pirrelli's were no longer cutting it for me. He suggested the Bridgestone 403 front, and 404 rear, in 110/100.
Well the difference is night and day to say the least, to go from a 6 ply HD off road tire to 4 ply MX type tire. The difference was so great, I thought my suspension oil was shot, as I gave them their first test directly after the 6 hours of Glen Helen. The ride was so much more plush it was unreal.
The first place I rode with them was out at Red Mountain, a desert riding area here in So Cal. There's a bit more clay in the sand here so the whoops tend to get a bit more hard faced and steep, and there's lot's of them, miles and miles of them. I could really feel the difference in weight as well.
I was running the bridgestone 4mm thick tubes as well, and running 14psi front and rear. While the front would slide in soft sand, it never broke away like the p's would. And the rear hooked up really good.
The second test was at Glen Helen raceway on a practice day on the National Track. The track conditions were pretty good, the track was moist but not muddy, and some sections were dry and hard pack, not unlike the conditions at the 6 hour.
Again, the difference was unreal, the 403 front really hooked up well, even at extreme angles. And the rear was super tacky. So much so that on the Mt. St. Helen type uphills, if I was in a gear too high and tried to accelerate I could not keep the front end down, I'd have to shift down and spin up the rear a little.
Time will tell how well they work out in the desert, but, for now I'm fully impressed!
