Mikey, I do not understand why you would part out a bike just because of a knocking sound. Just yesterday you posted you were worried about your main bearings, we told ya to ride it and not worry. Now you obviously went and rode the bike and you say it has a knocking sound, fair enough. If you do not have the time to deal with discovering what is knocking, then take it to somebody that will diagnose it for you. How bad is the knock? If there is a problem and nothing has failed yet the repair will be reasonable in cost, so don't give up yet. How would you feel if you sold the bike for a loss just find out something simple was wrong and was easily fixed? I guess I just don't consider motorcycles as disposable.

Just a thought,

When the primary nut comes loose, doesn't that also make a knocking type noise?

i'm a mechanic for my living not 60 miles from you!

bring it here and i'll do you a proper job in no time and at a reasonable price!

can you afford to lose £1,000 on the bike?

Persevere with it or take up Taffy's offer. It's taken me virtually a year of on and off activity on my bike to overcome the issues but now it's rideable and great fun. It's been more time than cost and I have still some small things to do on it.
Have a few beers and think again

You'd be crazy not take up Taffy on his offer.
The 501s are very well regarded and worth the effort.

well i am worried about stripping it by myself....i cant afford for the enginnering place to do it again.i need to get hold of a crank case puller and a few other things i think....??

the way i think of it is that i am going to do all this work and then when its back and running ok its still has the big chance of failing

any help and advice please from sumone whos opened the crankcases sucsesfully

Have you had the updates already done? Rockers, counterbalancer & camchian?

If yes then get on with fixing her she will be very good to you!

If no then there is no reason to use capital letters in your post's.

its had a new cam chain, rew rocker bearings, still has counter balancer which i want removed wether it makes more vibration or not...anything that can lower the chances of failiure i would try and do.

how difficult is it to split the cases what tools ??

flywheel puller, rivit tool for cam chain,I have heard people getting by without
same with case splitter. You can do it!!

Mikey4410,

Any bike you ride (that is any fun) will offer up the same "what if" issues. the general consensus is that the 501 is a great motor. Every bike has "chance of failing" and every person who rides takes the chance that after they dump some money the bike might break (or in my case, I'll ride it off of a cliff or into a tree or something) there are no guarantees. figure out whats wrong, spend some time and sort it out do the updates and you will have a reliable bike as any make/model out there.

take Taffy up on his offer, some cash and some beer and he will set you straight.

Hey Mikey, set Taffy a budget (aprox what you could spend) get it sorted then come to Swaffham hit the dirt. If it actually blows up, part it then but for now ride it & laugh.

Like many are saying, take it to Taffy and at the least have him diagnose the said knock and then you can at least make an informed decision as to what step you're willing to take next.
He does after all know Bergs better then most.

as said, bring it up and i'll listen and offer you what free advice we all can and do here! never a problem!

regards

Taffy

mikey4410, To have Taffy at your disposal for a mere one hour drive is truly a stroke of luck for you. I would not pass up this opportunity. Be sure to bring him some good Ale as quality lubrication is not only important for motorcycles but mechanics as well.

Having the knowlage of someone like Taffy at your disposal to diagnose the issue is a rare occurance, do it!

Taffy,
I'd say it's probably a good thing you didn't get involved this guy. Afterall, there really is no help for some people in this world. He'll be better off and much happier when he gets his hands on a motarded 1999 XR250!

log

the stator cost him 170 to get rewound, he has installed it and ran it, and now he is asking 190... guess he really does not want to part the bike ....
