After studying my new 05 FE650e today, I noticed another problem...or maybe just lack of quality. The flimsy chainguard is not anywhere near centered over the chain. It literally rubs on the tire's right side knobbies. Since it's not metal, it cannot be tweaked to hold a different setting allowing it to line up properly. I was thinking of using a heat gun, but this may cause other problems. Does anyone know of a simple fix....or maybe a better aftermarket chainguard (probably the better idea)??? :? :? :?

Hi Rustie,

If its like my 04 Berg, there is a small 'L' bracket on the top of the swing arm that aligns the plastic guard, I had to tweek mine a little to center the guard.

How necessary is it where you are? Here it seems they get fitted to pass road registration then only go back on when the bike gets checked each year. They don't do much.

I found that guard to be less than sturdy and rattle very badly against the tire. So it go the toss. Too bad because someone spent a great dial of time making it look trick, but they zeroed on it I think. I hope though, that you will be able to make it work.

I had the same trouble. Not only that one of the retaining bolts kept coming loose no matter what (probably because of the constant rattling and stress). I got rid of it - no more hassles. It doesn't add any safety imo.

Yeah, I've thought of just tossing the damn thing (it's a real sloppy/floppy attachment). I was hoping that someone might know of an aluminum replacement. Anybody? :?: :?: :?:

I have been thinking about that bike. To broke right now. But how do you like it? How is the power? How would you rate it compared to other bikes?

Sorry for the same old question everytime guys, just never got a straight answer from anyone on a good comparison.

The chain guard is a component that is fitted to the registreable models to meet specific goverment regulations. Much like the cover over the airbox and the mesh restrictor in the muffler they are removed as part of the "offroad" setup. The competition FS and FC models don't have the guard as it is not required for competiton use. The 05 chain guard is completley different to the 04 model. Simply remove the guard and refit the screws to stop water ingress and all will be o/k.

justin,
I just got it this Saturday have only fired it up in my garage! I have yet to ride the damn thing, but I got this bike to trash my brother who just got a KTM 525 EXC. I have rejetted my FEe from a 178 main and 45 pilot to a 180 main and 48 pilot. Now it starts MUCH easier and doesn't light up the head pipes to a cherry red anymore!!! The small increase in the main was just to ease break-in, and prolly won't amount to much of a difference,

BUT.....jetting these Bergs is a ROYAL pain in the ***!!! You barely have access to the carb as opposed to the KTM 525. Hope I never have to change the needle position!!! 8O 8O 8O

bahnsy,
Yeah....trashing the guard is the easiest thing to do, but I would much rather find an aluminum replacement....or at least a plastic unit that fits better. WTF was the factory thinking anyway??? :( :( :(

Did you check that the bolt that is almost hidden under the swingarm up front is tight,on my 550fe(o5) it was not and after alignment and tightening all chain guard bolts no more problems so far.
