Head Gasket blown on 2006 FE550 yesterday. Rode home fine, no water in oil just spitting out of the front of gasket by the head pipe. I am going to replace this next week, should I be replacing anything else while I am in there. I have 140 hours and 3000 miles on bike.

Thanks

140 hrs should be ok i would check the crank axial play should be 0.4 -0.5mm if its 0.2 or so look at changing the mains soon http://husaberg.org/mechanical/17170-definative-main-bearing-thread.html

there are a few other things in the top end that can go near 200 hrs most are covered here

valve spring specs and pricing are here

Kibblewhites are the best by a mile and often on ebay for $160, the ktm set is the most economical

maybe also check the cam chain tensioner the DID chain will sit on 2-3 clicks left for around 100hrs, a new DID rivet link is $3.50

youll have to split the timing chain to get the head off, so you might as well do a new chain, the cam follower bearilngs also are way past their half life at 150 hours so they are a mandatory service item being you are in it already.

Valve springs you say? might as well as its your money we are spending. I put the DVSK from ktm..when one broke at 250 hours...the part number is 83036028044

they were circa $75 a year or so ago.

youll need valve seals as well. you could clean up the casting boogers in the intakes on the head if you were bored...

iirc, all the above, and a head gasket cost me around $300 at the local dealer.

you are only looking to take the head off right?

suggest you clean the two surfaces using a plained piece of baton wood and some P600 going arounf both surfaces across the quarter angle so 3 to 12 o clock and moving onwards all the time. piston BDC, wipe clean.

this and a new headgasket and cam chain are all you need.

use an Iwis camchain, it costs more but is worth the extra. always use a new HG.

check everything else while you're there: the list is endless though. DVSK is a must. my modified ADC spring.

regards

Taffy
