Blown fuses

Hi
I have a 2000 FE400E and every time I turn the key to start it blows the fuse. Any ideas?? I spoke with one dealer and he said new key assembly another said possibly solenoid on starter motor. I live a long way from any dealers so want good advice before I load up and drive off!!

I would check my connections and wires for breaks. There is a hot wire grounding out or a short causing this. Do you have a meter to check with? If so it would be worth a try. Find witch wire is causing the problem and go from there. Get a wiring diagram and trace each wire. It will take time but if you can find and fix it yourself, it would help. Good luck

What Bill lists is correct. It is most unlikely to be a problem internal to the keyswitch. If the fuse blows as soon as you turn on the key it can't be the starter solenoid (big bastard relay).

The most likely place to look is the spade wire connections on the back of the keyswitch. The engine lill circuit has a ground wire running into the keyswitch to stop the engine. If this wire has been plugged onto the 12V output terminal on the the switch a dead short will happen when the switch is turned on & blow the fuse. The following wiring diagram shows how the two circuits go thru the switch.

Before you start doing continuity checks don't forget to isolate circuits unplug the relays etc...
