Blown fe570 engine
I am embarrassed to tell this story BUT it might help someone else from expensive engine damage.
Four weeks back I disassembled my 2010 FE570 engine with about 7600 miles on it.
I was seeing very small metal specks in the oil. The Husaberg engine parts were perfect, cylinder, piston all the bearings and rocker arms had no wear, great engine. Reassembled ran great.
About two hundred miles later the clutch was slipping in 5th and 6th gear in wet sand washes. Pulled the Rekluse clutch completely apart this time and the balls had worn through the anodizing of the pressure plate causing galling of the aluminum and the Rekluse center hub had a lot of wear from the Rekluse steel drive plates.
OK this was the metal I was seeing in the oil and on the screen.
I like the Rekluse clutch.
Installed NEW pressure plate, center hub and NEW OEM(KTM) clutch fibers. About $475. Of parts, OK it’s my toy!!
This is where the sad story begins.
The new parts fixed the clutch slipping. The Bike was working great.
I loaded up the bike and camping stuff, I was headed out of state for a few weeks of riding.
The new clutch fibers would have a little break-in wear so I was going to change oil after the first day of riding, WELL I was have to much fun and one day turned into two, three, four, I was putting over a hundred miles a day on the bike, ON the fifth day about forty miles into the ride, in a really cool sand wash the bike just QUIT running. AS we all do I blamed electronics for the problem.
The fuel injection and ignition were working perfect. Removed the air cleaner and cranked the engine, oil smoke and blow-by coming from the engine breather hose in the air box, NOT A GOOD SIGN.
When I got home I did a leak down test, had 60% leakage.
Disassembled the engine
The piston had over heated seized the rings in the ring lands scored the piston and cylinder slightly.
Reason for failure
OIL SCREEN was covered with fiber, CLUTCH FIBER
This reduced oil pressure enough (should have 55psi) that the two spray nozzles that lube and cool the piston were not working(spraying) as they should. This caused the piston to over heat.
THIS WAS TOTALLY my fault, I should have change the oil and I would have seen the oil pump intake screen being restricted by clutch fiber.
I replaced the cylinder and piston with OEM parts. Expensive yes but the original parts work great ( no oil consumption) I did not want to replate the old cylinder or use an after market piston.
Bikes running again and working great.
Bought a spare screen and plug assembly I will check it often. This screen is small and will plug easy be careful.
I’ve probably done drummer things but I don’t remember when!!
That’s my sad story, any donation will be spent foolishly!!
Have a great ride

Thanks for posting Haskell,

Sorry to hear that you had your engine blow up on you. Hopefully your "Bad day on slippery rock" will help some other folks out there who run the Rekluse set up as that seems to be very popular with a lot folks who have these bikes.

Dale

Wonder if anyone with a Rekluse clutch risks this even after changing the oil a few times.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Haskell.
Were both oil screens clogged?
The screen in the bottom of the engine case near the oil drain plug, and the screen in the banjo bolt in the Head?

Sorry to hear about your engine mishap, but good for you in diagnosing the problem and having the skills to fix your motor.
