Ok had the bike on the Dyno and the jetting was way out. Its gone from a 200 MJ down to a 175 to get the fueling right.

But the inevitable is the Dellorto is no good. The slider has some play and is causing stuttering at low speeds.

Looks like I need an FCR41 now. Which is not what I want to hear right now. This bike has cot me a fortune.

They seem a little loose even when new. The stuttering may be caused by a worn needle and needle jet. They should be replaced every 100 hours or 2, 000 miles. You will have to readjust the idle mixture and idle speed after making the change. If the valves are good the bike should run like new after doing this. It could be though that the previous owner changed these parts to different values. What are they?

They should be a DR272 and K51 according to the 02 owners manual.

It also says to use a 190 main jet. If the needle and needle jet are BADLY worn, they could cause it to be too rich over the entire throttle range. Maybe thats why the dyno man ended up putting in a leaner (175) main jet. You may have to put the 190 back in after putting in the other new parts.

I have 363 hours and 10,000 miles on my 00 501 and the slide hasn't worn a bit but I have gone through several needles and needle jets.

Regards,

Joe

i remember having jetting woes with mine and i took it too a farmer's field and thrashed it. turned out it needed a 200MJ and then i had to work the needle all over again!

what a pain!

who has run this dyno?

unless you have the right atomizer you'll find that the MJ causes problems elsewhere.

try looking at the jetting suggestions in the tuning part of the doc. they ARE relevant to your bike so try them. you should have a DR270 or DR272 in there. i didn't as you'll see. but then when i tried the carb the other settings weren't available for me to try!

The Dyno was done at SMracing Radcliffe Manchester. These where recommended by some guys on the supermoto forum on Visor Down.

I'll give the suggestions on here ago before I spend another 250 quid on it.

bloody right!

you can do all this yourself AND enjoy doing it! sure you go the wrong way at the beginning but later you guess right all the time and just love being a jetting detective...

i regret a lot in my life but not the pleasure i've had outta testing 4 'hunches' and all came up trumps on a sunday morning.

you gotta get off your fat arse and try it yourself.

no 'fanny flaps', no seat bolt, easy.

Ok I took the needle and the needle jet out and there is a k35 needle in a 272 needle jet. There is no such combination in the owners manual???

My question now is: when the throttle is closed does the needle completely close the needle jet off? i.e does the needle fill the hole in the needle jet? Well at the moment it dont. My thoughts now are that this is the reason I have over fuleing and stuttering at slow speeds.

I have ordered new K51 needle and a new 272 needle jet. I'll give these ago and let you know.

Cheers

perhaps the right decision tophat but it wasn't a fool that put that needle and atomiser combo in. i ran the K35 needle which you should have noticed when you visited the doc. i flitted between the K35 and K51 all the time. it's an excellent needle.

i worked my balls off but was new to dell os and didn't appreciate the atomiser differences.

drop your other jets in coca-cola to clean them up.

Update!!!

I have installed the new K51 needle and a 272 atomizer, I also put the 190 MJ back in too (the old atomizer was very worn). I only had chance for a 10 - 15 min spin but the results were promising.

The slow speed stutter has gone (well almost only a very slight stutter but a great improvement) After the 10 - 15 mins I cut the motor and kicked it again with one kick.

I then took the plug out and it was a dark brown color :D

I'll need to give it a good run and maybe fine tune the mixture and idle to get it just right.

I'll post back next week (Im of away for the weekend) when I have chance to give it a good run.

Cheers

So How Did You Come Across That Plug? Was There A Cross Reference Chart That Said That ***6** From Whoever Would Be A Direct Swap With **4*** From Someone Else?

Who is this for??

just curious. would be nice to know how taffy came to this plug?

Update.

After all the changes I made listed earlier in this thread I have also installed an IX spark plug and a DIY hot start.

The bike is now running like a dream, and starts with no problems at all hot or cold, and is now running sweet at slow speeds with no stuttering.

First kick from cold today (could have been a coincidence) and then first kick hot with the hot start several times :D :D

Cheers all for the input no doubt I'll be back for more help when the next problem pops up
