Bike Won't Start with Choke On

I have a 2001 FC550 and just recently it won't start with the choke on. I have to turn the choke on kick it over a few times and then turn the choke off and then kick the bike over. After doing this routine a few times the bike will start with the choke off.
Any ideas on why this might be happening?

Sounds like you have the "starting drill" down. Those bikes are very particular when it comes to starting. If you know what it takes to start it, then it's all good.
There are literally pages in the owners doc on tips on how to make the 01-03 bikes start easier.

Here is a link to the owners doc if you have never checked it out.

Probably not the advise you wanted, but it's good advise just the same :D
My 02 FC550 liked 4 or 5 kicks with the choke on. turn the choke off and it would usually fire.

I always thought this was a feature of my bike. 5 kicks WOT with decompression lever pulled and then full kicks until it starts. if it doesn't start in 10, then rinse and repeat.

If I use choke, I could kick until I'm purple and it's not starting.

suggest you replace the carb parts that wear. atomiser, needle, back to standard pilot jet, needle clip etc.

your plug will be getting old. try and sort the auto decomp and then convert the left bar hand decomp to a choke cable afterwards.
