Bike dies at base of hill climbs

Lately I've started riding my some pretty gnarly hill climbs and had a little trouble with my bike dying. (2000 fc501) Let me go into a little more detail, these hills generally do not have much of a transition area and they only have about 35 feet in which to gain speed, then a 60 foot sandy climb that very, very steep, so you have to start out in second gear and give her all shes got. I know that it is normal to have a bike stutter a little at the base of a climb because the motion of the suspension is putting more strain on the engine, but my berg pretty much dies at the transition then goes like crazy once its pointed up. 8O not good!!! I mean these hills are STEEP! Getting stuck on them is not fun at all. I have the sneaking suspicion it is caused by the stock gearing, which if I remember right is 14front 48rear, but I am not sure if it could also be a jetting issue. I've never dreamed of climbing these hills before I got my berg, so where should I be looking first? Sprockets, jets, or should I just have my head examined?
