Big Gun exhaust system

I picked up a Big Gun exhaust system that came off a 2000 501 and was thinking of putting it on my 99 FE400. How would it improve the performance? I also will have to fabricate it from the 2 into 1 collector to make it fit right and move the mounting brackets. While I fabricate this, do I need to put the little tube that goes to the frame on this exhaust system? Or can I just leave that off? Thanks guys.

Big gun does sell a complete system for your bike. Hard to tell the power gains, since it will be a custom system.

I've got a BG race system on my '99 600. Power is certainly not the problem, now. Very nice system!

Too loud, though IMO (and officer Campbell's). I tried to rebuild with the quiet core for a newer system. Hard work, then the bike wouldn't start. With the FCR just perfect now I didn't want to change anything. Put the old one back on and hope for lenient police officers.

I have the BG on my 01 and its a pile. I like it loud, but if thats not what you want, dont get it, the quite core is a joke, it kills the power. and my biggest complaint is the fit and finish. mine has fell off twice. I finally made a band type thing like the yosh pipes have to hold it on, cause from the factory it only slid into the stock headpipe about 1/4" and leaked like crazy. eventually the welds on the canister broke.

Yours too. When I got my bike the previous owner threw in a BG exhaust with broken mounts on the canister. I was considering sending it in for a quite core model, you get a 50% discount, but doesn't sound like it is worth it.

a mate of mine had a BG fitted to his old Yamaha WR400. That thing was way too loud for the bush/trail riding we do IMO. He sold the bike with it fitted a year ago & I just hope the buyer has made it quieter.

A great sounding bike is a good thing but - Be seen, not heard.

ok then what do you guys suggest i also have a 99 be it a 600 tho its currently standard but with all the baffling removed its loud but not to loud what can you lot suggest i have heard that this exhaust is quite restrictive from the factory

cheers doug

well i can tell you that about 14 systems were tried on the YZ426 about 3 years ago and the standard YZ pipe was the best followed by an open WB and an FMF. but the standard YZ was the best by a mile.

the days are gone when you can dial in extra gee-gee's with an after market pipe over standard.

i don't think the standard husey pipe is at all bad in FC or FX guise....

Too bad Akrapovic don't make one for the older models. I had their race system on my ZX-6R and it was absolutely beautiful. The welds were perfect, it added about 7 HP up top and the sound was spot-on perfect. Kwak growl at a very moderate level and turning into a deep wail (?) as the needle swung past 9K.

I should correct my previous statement on the BG. The header pipes are beautiful. Nice sweep to them, clean welds and a really nice ceramic coating on from factory. The canister is a different story. I have one of the older ones and they seem to be a bit crude. It hasn't fallen apart, nor do I expect it to, but I just wouldn't display it in a museum like the Akrapovic. Their newer design does look better, however.
