ha! ha!

you all viewed in thinking i was talking about the way this site is going. nope! while i'm here i'll try and save it from the loonies!

nope, i'm on about a piston that would knock out the 450/470/550/628/644 by another 40cc approximately?

102mm bore. just a special headgasket and off you go! you can use the original linar.

what do you reckon troops?

duz it make it faster innit ?

haha sorry couldnt resist taff ...

so its a straight swap of pistons and a different HG ? Sorry to sound thick but im guessing my 650 is actually 644cc !?

and the mother of all questions ... how much ?

the linars would be cheaper than OEM at £150. the pistons around £150 - 20% ore than aftermarket and 33% less than OEM. headgaskets the same price as OEM.

we share certain manufacturers but as i'm aware, he does the 105s which need major work.

why am i secretive? try the words "balance factor" and "90%"

hold the phuck on Taff!

you said just a change of piston, then you're telling us how much the new linar ill be??

Thought this was another quiz, anyhow, cant work out how an engine with a set stroke from an unchanged crank and con rod and set bore (same head / combustion chamber) can change the total dispalcement, if its a piston only, then you must either be talking about a blown combustion chamber or a domed / cupped piston or something ungainly like that?

fess up.

sheesh!

sorry you didn't understand!

it's easy; your original linar bored out to 102mm but if it is wrecked then a new lina will be needed - thus the pricing up!

i think you're looking at it from a different direction? 1 in 3 of my rebuilds if not 1 in 2 has a trashed linar so the owner has a choice of a new standard piston and a recoated linar or a rebore and coating with a 102mm piston. the cost is then only the cost of boring out the linar. = cheap as chips.

i don't advocate a new linar or indeed a bored out perfectly-good-linar to anyone. just the trshed ones. if someone came to me with a perfectly good linar i would give them a p/x prie against a new 102mm linar and stock theirs on the shelf as a perfectly good used linar.

i hope this was clear!

you're right Taff, i was just fishin' but i understand you now, so were taking linars from 100mm to 102mm? that would be close to your 40cc's would'nt it be?

Jbs has told me that the 105mm was just to put in as stock parts, but the 108mm need to bore the cases out.

isent the liner on a 650 to thin to boreout to 102, not much material in it stock?
Better to have a steel or cast-iron liner?

Regards

you can run a cast iron linar thinner than niksasil. also despite the fact that the piston potentially can have a smaller running clearance with the nikasil - THEY DON'T! finaly, the husaberg pistons run hardened chrome rings which are better suited to an iron sleeve than the hard v hard of chrome on nikasil.
agree with swedish, and yes i did poin this out 6 months ago. i described how langcourt's of the UK said that there was too much distortion in the linars. it's particxularly bd on the 450/470i believe.

Taffy

Is the distortion due to the manufacturing process or after a period of use (abuse).

How about cryoing a new liner before installation?

the piston on the shorter stroke motors is trying to pull the front bottom and push the back top out of the linar. short rod, revs etc.

th aluminiul is abit toooooo thin. of course you have to add in the owners and what they are dong to the engines as well......

Ok, I know..old thread.
But has anyone done a 102mm piston on their 550?
That would effectively bring it to 590cc right.
Sounds like an interesting idea for my 07.

Hi Pollo

tis indeed an old thread! where did you find it?

I have had oversize 650 liners made in alloy with success and have a production piston which is cheap enough. I also have Head gaskets. (103.5mm ID).

nothing in 550 but I'm having batches of 450 replacement liners made and slipping a 550 liner in there wouldn't be a problem.

we designed the liners so that we measure dimensions from the ends and so the rim is measured from the top but the O ring grooves are measured from the bottom. it means we simply 'open' the middle to alter the height of the liner from 450 to 550 to 650.

easy-peasy-lemon squeezy!!!

I did a search for 102mm piston and found the thread.
I remember someone saying the old 600 was like the 550 but with more beans.
So inquired out of curiosity.
My 550 just ticked over 120hrs and running great, but when the time comes I
could very well be interested in making it a 590.
Especially if it was going to be a rare build. I think it could be an awesome motor.

why not make a packer and turn it into a 650?

650 crank, 650 rod, 650 liner, 650 CCTB, 650 camchain, unfortunately you'd need a 650 piston (dished). all from bits on the shelf. probably all you need to make is the packer and a card base gasket for the packer.

I have the packer design here. I've made one just 9mm thick for my long stroke motor but again, we designed it to be stretched. i think at about 40mm thick it would be stable as well.

just some ideas. if you ever make the 590 you'll need a flat or dished piston. it won't be domed so the thermals in it should be excellent.

I was thinking 590 because I already have my 06 650.
And may do something with that someday as well. The guy that won the Mackay grasstree beach race on his 650 has a 102 piston with I believe 82 crank at 670cc. That sounds good.

pollo

are you on about the Aussie? mmm/ I know he has 82mm stroke but didn't know he has 102mm bore.

Taffy

Yes, I happened to talk with him in a group and he told me about it..
