Best upgrades for '02 650

Hello,

My camwheel just went on my intake rocker, luckily before too much damage, and I want to ensure I make the most effective upgrades while i'm changing the wheels.

Could someone please tell me what year and model of upgrades are the best for this application. Specifically what components should I change in the rocker assembly or general valve component area.

Furthermore, while in there should I change the cam chain and gears to the steel newer ones. Again what is the best upgrade?

The bike maybe has 120 hours on it and again its an 2002 650FE.

Thanks. HusaPemby.

kez

you got excited there!

steelcamwheel, '06 camchain which is D.I.D made, you can use an '08 cam which is also in the parts book as '000'. this has softer ramps than your viscious versions (doimng the damage) the '03 tensioner blade was upgraded slightly again for '04. the original camchain tensioner is fine, i still have it! all you do is literally rip the alloy button off the end.

as for the rockers, well you can keep those as well, all you do is buy the upgraded cam follower bearing kits and slip them in. as easy as ABC.

and that should be it. not sure how the decomp upgrade works, perhaps others here can help with that.

as has been said, there are other upgrades such as a keihin FCR carb, tuned exhaust, porting, big valves, belmouth and filter mods. the list goes on. the 470 piston has a higher comp than your 650 BTW.

Then there is always the updated main bearings and balancer assembly, or even the removal of said balancer.

that's true. i've tried balancer in and out and prefer in. go too twin ball race bearings for the balancer. can go to taper roller mains which you should if you're tuning the bike. basically the ball race bearings are at the end of their reliability envelope if you tune the bike.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going with new steel camwheels (rollers), roller bushings and bearings, steel upper cam gear and newer DID camchain.

hopefully that takes care of things for awhile.

I caught this weakness before it turned bad, is there any tell-tale signs to keep an eye or an ear out for with respect to the main bearings?

she'll stall easily, may vibrate if you're thick and didn't guess something else was wrong. she may rattle as you rev it as opposed to even throttle or decel when it sounds the same.

all you have to do is pull the ignition cover off and GRAB the flywheel, make sure all your energy goes into up and down tugging and NOT diagonal type stuff. you'd be amazed how many people say it's fine and then an old mechanic comes over and tugs it correctly and syas that 'they're ph....d".

although there are trail riiders here who change oil here after every ride it's unnecassary etc BUT with a tuned 650 it would start to get critical again.

but like i said TUNED - and you sir, have yet to even look at it....

good luck

Cam's bucked to.

Just found out the cam is hooped as well. The intake lobe is gouged from the non-functioning roller wheel.

What are the options for a cam replacement for this bike. 2002 FE650. Any estimates on price would help as well.

THanks.

RE: Cam

the factory cam "08" is the same spec as the lineaweaver cam virtually. it's code doesn't really matter. fact is anything '04 plus is the "08" cam.

i have an '02 and you need the upgraded cam follower bearing kit. most dealers will understand what it is you require.

the doc explains what the pins should look like from the side when you're done.
