Best tyre for muddy trails

I'm interested
For wet muddy trails with woody hill climbs do we still think the Michellin S12 rear is the best tyre for the job.
How about the T63 AC10, etc.. what do ya think ?

I run a dunlop D606 but that's mainly cause where I ride there's mainly granit hills, bitumen or real sloppy mud. They seem to work for me but a lot of people don't like them. The local boys love the MT04 around here but I shred them in about 20-30 hours of riding. My D606 is the 3rd rear tyre I've had in 3 years but it's been on there for 2 of those 3 years.

I have been running AC10`s and they are a lot better than the standard Pirrelli Scorpion`s in mud.
They are hard wearing and road legal in good old blighty.

a recent test by TBM voted the dunlop 06 the best tyre both front and rear and then they were the cheapest as well!

doesn't get any better does it! i think the S12 is regarded as a brilliant front but not sure wether anyone ever claimed it had the same grip over the rear (pun intended). the maxxis rear came second. it was in only 3 TBMs ago.

Down in cornwall , where most of the trails are muddy down the bottom but stoney/slatey the rest of the way, we use trials tyres , mostly pirelli MT43`s.This is good practice as the south-west championship enduro`s only allow these tyres.
I have used mitchy comp 3`s in the past, they`re a good tyre.

I have tried the maxxis Taffy and didn`t like them much. A magazine test is all well and good but i feel it comes down to the individual and what is good for him/her and there riding style 8) . Yes some tyres are better than others in the mud for cleaning themselves but there are different types of mud. I should know I have spent years getting to the bottom of this problem :oops: :?

Ady ive run the dunlops tested in tbm not a bad tyre but the rear was'nt great in the slop me thinks a better trye for dryer weather.The S 12 front is good tyre but no good for any road work it soon wears , never got on with the rear S12 but loads of people rate them . Still rate the Trelleborgs as a great slop hillclimbing tyre the supermaster hope thats some help ady

The IRC M5B is my choice for muddy or loose conditions. I put the biggest one they make on the back of my FE-550 and it hooks up great! Last weekend BigBob said he had to be carefull when following me because of the roost!!!

You talking about the leather?

We were doing a bit of a road ride before (carving up sports bikes), then it was off into the bush for a bit of trail riding.

It was not like that the entire time, only in a few sections and that was the worst one above.

As soon as you hit a puddle, and we are talking about a pot of beer puddle, you have no grip and I mean 0 grip, untill the tyre drys off after a few revolutions.

To get through the above pic, we basically walked the bike with it just spinning and providing no drive. It was a funny situation, cos the way home was just in front of us and there was no other way around the water, other that to head about 90% back the way we came. So we went for it!
 
We were riding in that area on saturday and although the one areawhere the KTM is (and WR450 got bogged - see my gallery) has been cleaned up, the other one where you are going through with the berg is still boggy and wet. It is even difficult to negotiate with knobbies - even though mine are worn (waiting for our wet season to get new one). Problem is that the 4WD's chop up the tracks more than the bikes.
 
the puddles around here seem to be really deep but have a near flawless introduction and no real steep bits so ya make sure your doin at least 60 km/h sit right on the back of the seat and just as the front hits the puddle you go full throttle and aqua plane right across it. The biggest I've done would've been about 40 feet or 12 metres and the puddle when my mate went through was up to the bottom of his fuel tank on a KTM 450exc.

Damn good fun.
 
Ady if i had the pooter skills i could post a link but i dont sorry just look in tbm for the number , got a shed full of part worns if you need some free rubber , haven't been away just tend to have quick skeg not before reading the doc cover to cover before posting owt,we should get out for a ride
