belmouth fitted and bored to 41mm carb

i took the carb into the engineer's and he has bored it to 41mm as he did with scoots. i had a blanking plate made for the end of the TPS shaft and most importantly i had a belmouth fitted.

most of you will have heard of this through dale. i had the alloy belmouth machined (as opposed to bored) out to take the blue plastic 50mm belmouth from keihin. this had to have the bolting lugs lathed off and then it was press fitted and araldited in.

the flare on the belmouth was reduced from some 72mm or so down to 68mm by just filing the outer rim slightly. this was done to allow the belmouth to fit in the air filter.

the air filter in question is a cone shaped pipercross filter PK003F. this filter fits into the triangulated area behind the sock-above the cross brace and between the two down tubes of the mid frame.

the standard outer Diameter of the belmouth for the sock is 62/64mm and the entry to the air filter is 70mm, so i had a white plastic ring machined up that was very broad and this was pressed onto the alloy belmouth.

i haven't made any extra holes in the plastic belmouth for the air feed to the PAJ and MAJ. because these belmouths are from a bank of four for jap multis: they have left a little straight 'nick' out of each side which is all the air feed that these two jets will need.

when first assesed i realised the air filter would push against the shock absorber so i filed away a production hole on the carb above the belmouth and what with the broad shoulder of the plastic i can now get the filter right against the carb and just about away from the shock.

i may even get a narrower jubilee clip and slice part of the filter's shoulder off and move it even further forward. the filter comes off the carb and off the belmouth easily now though.

the filter is foam and has a metal cage inside to give it shape. this i've ovalled very slightly but alas the filter toiuches the back of the boot mount in the frame and also sits on the cross strut in the frame.

the carb must be tightened on first and then the filter is tightened at an angle afterwards with the filter having to angle down slightly. so the top edge of the plastic ring on the belmouth can just be seen.

i've used the filter cleaning kit and oiler coded P/CC9005 and P/CC8999 and with the filter PK003F they can all be ordered in the UK from demon tweeks on 01978 663027, they're at wrexham in north wales. filter £34, cleaner and oiler were £20.

the blue belmouth i got from allins performance on 01949 836733, they are at bingham in notts. that was £13-all prices inclusive.

i've removed the original filter from the top of the housing and until i'm sure that this is working and WORTHWHILE i will leave it there touching the filter.

so far, when jet washing, i have rolled a plastic sheet up over and around the filter and it has been such a 'snug' fit that it was bone dry after a wash. there is less crap in the carb now than with the original set up!!! as the old set up required a shorter carb than the dell orto with a subsequent misfitting 'sock' and the grim that was within.

cleaning appears to be a pain because i need to wash without crushing the filter which isn't going to be easy.

PERFORMANCE
the carb is stronger at 1/4 throttle and switchback esses, this is the first time in second gear that the bike has lifted and the wheel not being where i wanted it. it's too early to say what the midrange and top are like but i do know that the 41mm bit of the equation only helped to top out in 6th gear.

so the bottom end performance boost is from the belmouth mod. next week i race with lots of open straights so we'll see!

the increase so far is 'small' but i'm not too sure where the bottleneck in the system is at present? i have some larger headers to try from 'simon' so it maybe they that help because they are the most needed.

mildly suprised that nobody jumped in on this thread last weekend but there you are.

dry race today with some fast straights and tight stuff as well, so a pefect chance to try the new bike out. the belmouth makes a small difference at low revs and is most noticeable in second off a closed throttle. it'll do the same in first - it adds grunt!

i often found myself in a gear to high and the bike pulled this really hard. sometimes it felt like the bike did as well off torque is it would off BHP.

i have to do some jetting testing now just to be sure that i've noit missed something.

Taff:

I suppose you fit something like these:

Is a Bellmouth the same thing as a velocity stack? I presume they are.

Taffy, you tinker so much with your bike, I wonder if you have any time left to tinker with anything else...? :D

I guess this is not for regular trail riding, now, is it?

i'm on a promise tonight nicky boy and there will only be one kind of tinkering!

i've told you where it will improve the power and by how much, i've told you how to do it and what it'll cost.

you may now make an informed decision....!

i reckon if you won't to pop the front wheel this is the mod.

as said, there could be more but i have to check the jetting. the track was so rough i couldn't tell bumps and judders apart for setting the carb.

if you want any help nick do ask. please do me the favour of telling me how to post photos now that i don't have a web site host.

you know the ones - straight onto this thread.

i reckon if you won't to pop the front wheel 550CC is the mod.

Taffy good to see you still at it mate
cookeye

taff

could you put some piccies of this in your gallery please mate. Very interested in this for my FS650

i didn't get permission from my freind to go this far so i'll say no for now.

PM me if there's anything you don't get?

spiney

how did that zorst go? you know the one you outbid me on you bastard! actually, i couldn't beleive my luck because one came up in july and i got it.

if anyone wants to see some pictures on the belmouth, they should appear in the next day or so. maddel is the boss! he'll be putting it all up and hosting it.

it's going to be in: "in tuning and go faster aids"

the exhaust is a pearler :) Headers taper out nicely to a mid-pipe that tapers out to 60mm  I struggled to get a can to fit, but got a very 2nd hand one from Clarkie which my mate modded to fit. It's a tad loud  and needs jetting to suit

RE: Re: RE: Re: belmouth fitted and bored to 41mm carb

because mine has to fit a 400, it hits the bloody cases! so the welder is going to have to come out. makes me cry coz it is lovely to look at - at present!

should be good though for back-to-back tests in february/march. just no time at present.

RE: Re: RE: Re: belmouth fitted and bored to 41mm carb

this has now been fitted over 18 months. for dirt riding the filter probably isn't fine enough, infact i know it isn't as i always find a fine dust inside. by ovalling the filter slightly i have made it easier to get right into the back near the shock and know that it won't wear through - which it hasn't.

it's difficult getting the assembly in and out.

would be impossible with an E-starter. seriously!!! - no F-ing way!

TO GET IT IN AND OUT
the only way to get it in and out is to undo the manifold at the head and it all pops out nice: filter, carb, manifold!

getting it all in is as bad and i tend to put the fileter into the deepest point, then feed the carb in and into the filter, leave it loose and then feed into the manifold. A LOT OF PRODDING THOUGH! so all as a unit is better. then add the cables.

BTW, i don't run the cable covers from keihin - i can't imagine how difficult it would be!

in recent times i have filed curves out of the white plastic ring to allow easier fitment of the nuts down the side.
i now have checked whether it's possible to pull the carb through to the right even with my doma system there and blow me! it still fits in! the exhaust didn't make it anymore impossble than it was!

i could now do with a double fuel feed with a pipe each side because the pipe drops on the hot exhaust when removing the tank. but that's another story!
