What is the easiest way to removes the battery from a 400 without dismantling the bike!
remove the top shock bolt with the bike on a tall stand and swing the shock back. Remove the battery with tray rearward and out under the exhaust. Its a titght fit, but its the least amount of disassembly .

As the pre 01 models are easy top load I assume you have a 01-up.
easiest way I have found is 1. remove seat and put bike on stand 2.undo rear top shock mount,rotate shock rearward.3. take out the bolts that hold the battery box,leaving battery and cables attached.4.wiggle complete battery box assy out from right to left exiting behind on kickstarter side.

somehow I was able to to remove it together with battery box without unscrewing shock. just had to unscrew rear brake fluid cup.
