Battery question

Too much choice on Ebay! Which battery is the most powerful that will fit in my FE450 2004? Looking at the sizes and they all vary a little, some are 111mm long, others are 114mm long. I don't want to have to force it in so the 111mm long batteries are the ones to go for I guess!
I don't want to pay for a Lithium battery though as they are too expensive but the 'normal' batteries vary from £30 to £90!
What do you guys recommend?

Also just a quick question. It might have been because my battery is totally dead but when the bike was idling with the lights on, if I used the horn the lights got brighter!? Is that normal??

Cheers!

Ben

Hi Ben,

i've just put a Varta YTZ7 in my 450, i had one in my 650 for two years without problems after two CTZ7's died within a few hours of fitting.
It was the same size as the standard.

Not sure about the horn/light situation, is the horn running AC or DC (off the battery or engine?)

I would advise a Li-ion battery from Shorai.

Good fit, 1/3 of the weight of the OEM battery.

Very sturdy battery, even with -15C.

Not sure to be honest but I guess it must be AC... The battery has absolutely no power in it at all so, as the horn worked when it was running, I think it must be from the engine!
I like the loook of the Motobat battery on Ebay as the specs are good and it's not too expensive! There is far too much choice though!!
I do like the idea of mounting a big battery under the seat though but that's a project for another time!

Li-ion batteries in the UK are mega money! They start at £125 + postage and I've seen one at £200!
Not an option if I can get a good battery for £40!

Ben

I understand.

But you'll appreciate the better handling, the better stamina and the fact that you can leave them in the bike for two months, standing still, but without loosing any voltage! :bounce3:

Lol! Maybe when I have some spare money I'll consider it! For now though I have just ordered myself a Motobatt MBTZ7S. It's an AGM battery with 130CCA. Including the postage it set me back £35! I might live to regret it but I will post up on this thread with how I get on!

Ben

I have a motobatt has been in bike maybe 5 months works really well seems to have plenty of grunt and half the price of a yusa or shorai ones. Was looking at shorai to reduce weight but needed one quickly and none were advailble in oz at the time.

Well the battery is on and so far it seems good! It cranks over very nicely... Time will tell how it handles charging and discharging and getting soaked!
I will let you know in a month how it is!

Ive been looking round at this myself, ive only looked at 'normal' batteries.
The Yuasa YTZ7S 130cca is the dogs Around £80
Varta Funstart YTZ7S-BS 110cca Around £40
Exide Maintenance Free Battery YTZ7-BS 110cca Around £30
Prices from http://boschcarbatteries.co.uk/

Now looking at Yellow battery (motobatt) Im not trusting when it comes to amazing power for amazing price.. you dont get something for nothing.
The specs say its 6.5Ah (the above are all 6Ah) and has 130cca all for an amazing £30 from Busters on Ebay (couldnt find it on their none ebay site)
Now my experience on batteries with mega hi capacity and cheep price from China has been disapointing to say the least BUT i have no knowledge of these (can joe bloggs on the street tell if it really has 130cca and not 90cca??). i look forward to some positive feedback before i bite the bullet and by a battery.

Just put all this in context. not having anything to compare with, a dead 3V YTZ7S Yuasa and only had the bike 2 days (2003 FE501). I stuck the wifes Honda NSR125 battery on (same physical size) a YTX5L-BS with only 90cca and 4Ah. I was using the battery to spin the engine over with the decomp pulled in (clean the system) and kicking to try and start. I didnt realise it was flooding due to a stuck float needle. i did also turn the engine over a few times to try and start with the decomp released and also with it pulled in to get the engine spinning before releasing the decomp.
The YTX5L-BS did about 10-15 start runs as above each around 10 seconds of cranking before it started to give up, i was also kicking between electric runs. Which given i was trying to get used to starting the bike, stale fuel, didnt know you need to turn the hi-low switch to hi to start, had a flooding carb etc I dont think the battery did to bad. it was definately turning the engine over quick enough to start, had everything else been ok.

Cheers Pete

Morning Pete,

i can definately recommend the Varta Funstart, had one on my old 650 for about 30 hours before it was moved over to my 450. It lasted another fifty hours before a wiring issue drained it totally over christmas.
Just fitted a new Varta.........at £40.

cheers Carl
