Barrel starter for berg

Hi all, am Helgard from South Africa. Bought 01 Fe 650 yesterday. Nice. Starts crap. Am building a jig where I can jump/ run start it off my GSXR1000. Rearwheel to rearwheel on a kind of paddockstand setup. Will tie both down well. Berg side will be on a hinge so it presses down on the suz wheel. Suz in first or second at enough rpm to make power. Berg with me on in equivalent gear. What would be the appropriate gear where a berg will start easily? Any thoughts? Will post pics. When I have more time I will make a dyno-like setup where both bikes face the same way as this way it will be easier to setup.

Cheers, Helgard.

Hi, am just thinking that a strong electric motor with a small friction wheel will also work ala motogp. If you use a 12volt motor you can even take it with on weekends etc.

Helgard,

my advice:read yourself through the Owner´s Doc - "poor starting" and carburation topics.
the owner manual can sometimes also be a good source of information 8O

Don´t think any additional "starting gimmick" is necessary -
it took me some time to understand how "she" wants to get started,
but once you got it, she´ll fire up (latest) at 2nd or 3rd kick...

I agree with Gokail134, pay close attention to the valve settings for our bike. Mine would not start either but after a valves adjustment and a good carb cleaning it will fire cold 1-3 kicks. hot on the 1st kick.

Or you could update the old starter to a 2004 or newer 650 model. It will start off the button everytime...

Yes i definitely agree with previous you must have starting snags get it set right and the valve adjust is the most important it took my a couple of hours to fine tune mine , it starts of the button hot or cold and kicks with minimum effort 1st time now, a lot of messing but well worth getting your head around something that seems simple but can, in my case anyway, require a bit of finesse.
