Barn Find - 2005 FS650 all original

Hello everybody, I just added a new Berg to my stable. I cam across a 2005 FS650c that has been sitting behind a barn for most of its life. It still had the orignal filters and fluids. (Less than 10 hours)

Bought it cheaper than it would cost to set my FE570 up for sumo.

Since it has been sitting for so long, mostly outside, there are a few things that need to get sorted before I can run out and flog it.

All of the rubber has dried up and falling apart: intake rubbers, rad hoses, breather widget hose, and water pump poors fluid without having to start the bike.

Since the bike will never see dirt, I would like to reach out to my fellow members for information and mods that will help me get this bike all sorted out.

Any tidbits and advice are appreciated!

First stop would be motoXotica to see what dan has in the way of rubber bits. Then you might do well giving reno KTM a ring to see what they have on the shelf.

Speaking of rubber, I have to warn you, that dunlop Q2 and Q3 in a 160 WILL NOT FIT VERY WELL in the swingarm.

I have a bridgestone bt003 on my bike currently, and it's pretty wide. It's a tight fit. I've had to shave the edges down (both sides) with a block plane to gain a little more room.
And it still rubs the chain. It's a decent tire though, hasn't seen any wet pavement yet and won't as it's about done.

Dual compound, so eeked out >2,000 miles out of it so far.

If you want to eliminate chain rub drama, a pilot power in a 160 clears easily and the chain doesn't nick it. That may be what's on there now as a matter af fact, my bike had them as stock. Some swear by them, but there are better options IMO.
 
What Idle said. You're in the neighborhood to go to Motoxotica. Talk to Dan. I'd tear the whole thing down and set the specs, bearings, seals, etc. Bikes don't like to sit for long. How did you find someone that dropped over 9k in 2005 for a bike they never rode? I'd be suspicious. Still, a helluva find!
 
Idle, haha, ran down to drop my list off with Dan at lunch. Curious what he can dig up.

I know what you mean about the tire, too wide for the swinger, I have chain rub on one side and tire rub on the slip on.

I appreciate the info on tires, thanks! Not cheap to experiment.

The bike sat in a Las Vegas dealership until it closed in 09.

During a final walkthrough inspection of the building, they noticed the bike sitting in the back and was snatched up by a collector. He registered the bike in Sept of 09, it scared the crap out him, then sold it to the guy I bought it from.

He rode it for a total of 5 hours before the tags expired and was back in California, so CA DMV said no way to giving that bike a plate.

So it sat on the side of his barn giving refuge to chickens and a cat. The little boogers chased me all the way to my truck, obviously pissed about taking "their" bike.

Once I got it home and stripped it down, I could see my 13mm was the first to give the oil drains a turn. Same with the filter cover too. The only bolts that I could find disturbed were the seat screw and top shock mount. I think that was just for a battery replacement.

Either way, I'm stoked!

brought mine 08 m , wif 28hrs for 5 yrs old but owner didn't put to much TLC in the bike
Now ....let's the fun begin

. I swung by MotoXotica after work, and Dan had everything I needed, in stock! I emailed John Prior for the weep hole fix.

What a gem!

Take care of her and keep us updated. I'll have to soon get new rubber hoses for mine as well. Previous owner lived very close to the sea and some of them are very dry because of the salt.

i made my wheels tubeless about 9 tires ago, its really nice to be able to plug a puncture in 5 minutes and be back on the road.

i used mylar stickers over the nipples, and black rtv. theres no room for an out of true rim on my bike, so i wanted to be able to true them periodicly. i true or check the rear every
other tire, then soapy it up before changing it and fixing any leakers after breaking the tire down.


the other thread, its kind of a mess, but hey so am I.

you mentioned it had some tire/silencer clearance issues.

interesting read idle,

FWIW i install the master link so the longer pins are on the motor side of the chain, frame still cops a beating but the master link doesn't get damaged
 
Sorry it took me so long to get back. I have been working like mad to get it all sorted. My apologies about the pics, I've been doing this all by stupid phone; its the trade off with the wife: She gets computer and I get left alone in the garage.

I'm just waiting on the last part from OrangeBerg, which should be arriving soon. Then she should be all back shortly there after.
