i am looking at removing the balancer shaft from crank cases from a 97 501fe is this worth doing to save a little weight and gain a little extra power or shuld i just leve it in.

I'm looking for the same infomation but for a fs650e 2005. what are the pros & cons for removing the balancershaft.

once you're over 2,000 revs or so it gets smoother but until then you think your fingers are going to drop off! I pulled mine off my 400 so i had more to gain i reckon and I had to put it back and I've never regretted it for one second.

regards

Taffy

further to this question can i use a crank from a kick start bike with a full web crank by just fitting a starter gear from an electric start crank  so i can eliminate the balancer shaft as the electric start only has a half web crank.

sounds like a lot of work for that old of a bike. if you are really that curious, just find a kickstart only early 501 and ride it.
with all the wear factors involved, it's not worth it.
