That funny little race track at the bottom of the
Howdy peeps, from ya bro down under. just starting the big rebuild on my 04 650 an i've got stuck already Tell me. Is there a simple way to undo the balancer shaft nut? (other than the obviouse spanner socket etc). I have got the clutch and crank nuts undone but cant see an easy way of cracking the only one thats left. any ideas????

Yer. I should have explained better. how do i stop the balancer turning to undo the nut as the crank nut is now loose? Im thinking maybe the bit of broken gear in the manual is for locking the gears. mite have to break open a rice burner box to steal a gear.

I did them all at the same time with the air impact wrench. did not have this problem you mentioned.
I did not take the clutch basket out just undid the 3 nuts and then started to take parts out.

wrap a rag around it and hold it while you hit it with the air impac. or just slip on the crank gear and clutch outer to hold it

Xelent ideas people. Parameters are.... live in country, own heaps of tools but not a 30 deep nor air wrench. would usually give the ally bar a go but i have never worked on bergs before and didn't want to break a casing by going about it the wrong way.Plus being a sparky i find twisted copper works ok. cheers peeps. will keep you posted.

bit of gentle heat might help too, it will destroy the loctite at least.

i use 3mm thick soft alloy section to jam the gears and a 3/4" drive socket with the square drive only plugged in 1/2 way

Ive welded pipe extension and a steel handle onto 1/2" drive sockets for this problem before out in the bush with a lil generator for power, really really chitty welds

The lastest generation of electic/battery operated impact tools are now affordable, available and effective.
Available at most auto centres in dept and big box stores the age of the air tool is near its end.

Righto, Bushiebro gets the free beer. My copper wire got squashed, so next to hand was a piece of 5mm ally flat bar. Along with 30mm ring spnnr sorted in seconds. Will invest in a 30mm deep socket this week. Thank you very much to all participants. Have now finnished stripping motor but thats another story. Cheers.
