Bad-*** cams?

My bike seems to be a 400 on supercharged-steroids, so I am wondering if it is stock. I suspect aftermarket cams. What should I look for to confirm this?

cam.....! not cams :p bout only way to tell would be get hold of a standard cam and compare them..!

Thank you for correcting me doug. I am so new to my berg, I hadnt even noticed it was a single overhead cam design.

Why do you suspect that your 400 is on steroids? Have you ridden another 400 Husaberg that feels more tame than yours?

Im thinking that you just might have come to except the medioker junk these japanese makers have flooded the market with as "the standard" in which to judge all other bikes against. And now that you have felt the power of "The Force" you are having trouble making sense of all the disappointment and violation that you must be feeling. You, like so many of us, have been fooled into believing that Hondas, Yamahas, Suzuki, and Kawasaki are the dictators of how a bike should feel and how it should perform.

After reading your post, I believe I was able to come to the following conclusions......

*Your main jet is too small, probably running a 175, switch to a 200 as your starving the bike on the top end and thats causing the sputtering.

*Drop needle clip 2 positions and try a 30PJ and 40SJ

*Sprocket ratio is all wrong, stock is 15/42(FS) and 13/48(FE), may I recommend a 13/50 or 14/46.

*Air filter needs cleaning.

*Handlebars are too far forward.

*Left exhaust valve need adjusting.

If you follow these steps closely im sure you will not only have a problem starting you bike, but also it should run right along side the other mentioned japanese bikes.

Hope this clarifies things,
Sandskipper

Ps. I agree with 44014, open her up and take a look inside is the only way I could think to find out what cam you have in the bike. (BTW, the above post is done in all good humor.)

by pulling the valve cover off you can see the end of the cam. in tiny, tiny numbers you can see the cam code.

Yep, on the cam gear end. Look on the cam end sticking out from the bearing.

...mine is marked "01", which shouldn't be correct for an 02 550. :?:

Nope, havent ridden another berg. But Its a 400 that runs with xr650r's, which are VERY strong bikes. Jap or not. They are, by the way, fully uncorked models. I dont think even the KTM 400exc of a few years back runs close to this litttle berg. Simply amazing motor. More fun than, dare I say, my yz490. Its the incredibly stiff valve springs, and a few other things I have mentioned, that make me think it may have a performance cam. I appreciate those tech tips too. I'll see just how much I can slow it down. As for the future, I just dont see how I can go back to japanese after riding this bike. Except perhaps for cattle drivin the youngins outback. Then I think a jap bike will do just fine ;)

i find the hardest bike to beat in a straight line is a KTM 125SX, they outdrag me everytime. XR650's? i eat them for breakfast!
